I saw a youtube video yesterday that was a reader listing his top 5 fantasy characters and thought it would be a fun topic to post here.
Your top 5 fantasy characters of all time, and if you're feeling like it, why them?

Mine would be: (In no particular order)

Phedre (Kushiel Series/Jacqueline Carey): A strong yet flawed heroine that feels unique to the genre. She is strong in ways that are not necessarily typical. She isn't a warrior, yet is smart, and cunning. Her character has a lot of growth over the course of the series.

Alec (Nightrunner series/Lynn Flewelling): There is something about the character that I'm drawn to, that is not really explainable. I think that he has a great character arch and growth that feels genuine and strong. He is fiercely loyal and that is a trait I enjoy. In a day and age of grey characters and anti-heroes, sometimes its nice to just have an honest and true good guy to follow along with.

Achmed (Symphony of Ages/Elizabeth Haydon): Bad ass, and ornery, Achmed helps to keep this series from getting too romance heavy or cheesy. He's the antithesis to Rhapsody's endless goodness, and yet, he is loyal to his companions and after all is said and done, a hero.

Binabik (Memory, Sorrow and Thorn/Tad Williams): This character is fun, loyal, fleshed out, unique and pretty bad ass in his own right. He helps to make this series one of the best, and is a stand out character in a cast full of great characters, in my opinion.

Arya Stark (Game of Thrones/George RR Martin) In a series full of so many characters, Arya for me stands out. Her character arch and development is by and large the most vast and expansive. Going from a little girl with a lot of spunk to an assassin in her own right, I found myself always longing for more chapters of Arya. Of all the Stark children I feel like she has gone through the biggest transition, and is such a solid and interesting character that I can't seem to get enough of.

Oooh, only five? That is hard!

I agree with Phedre and Alec. I'll think about the rest. 🤔

Edit1
Savannah from Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld is on my list as well. Or maybe Jeremy is even cooler?

I am also a fan of Alec from the Nightrunner books by Lynn Flewelling, and would include him in my top 5.

I very much like Thomas from the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher and am so hoping he will have more page time in the new book whenever it eventually comes out!

I'm hoping no one minds if I throw in a manga character, because I really like Fai from the Tsubasa books by Clamp

I also like Jesse from the Mediator series (a YA series) and I'm thinking about re-reading this series.

Lastly, I'd have to say Victor Bayne from the Psycop series is one I really love.

It popped into my head this morning, but I have to add one more, a longtime favorite is Colin from Elizabeth Scarborough's Unicorn Creed story.

Ooh, tough one.

Hmm (in no particular order)
Morgan and also Raederle (Riddle Master of Hed)
Tristan and also Elisena (Winter King's War)
Ista (Paladin of Souls)
Aerin and also Harry (Damar)

Would you allow Cordelia and Aral (Vorkosigan Saga)?

That's off the top of my head, but so many more ...

The hard part for me is coming up with 5 favorite characters that aren't all from the Malazan series(es). Limiting myself to one character per series:

Bel-ka-Trazet from Shardik (this one was actually easy)
Hari Michaelson/Caine from Heroes Die
Draconus from Malazan
Sure, Harry Dresden, why not
Croaker from The Black Company

>9 humouress: Your reference to Damar made me take a look and lo and behold the reason it sounds familiar is because I had read and reviewed a book set by Robin McKinley that has those books in it. Unfortunately, I don't remember the stories well now, but back then I did an in depth review on the box set and each book. I mention this because I had named one of my favorite character's as Fai in my earlier post here, who I reference in my review and notes I made on the book set. Just thought it was an interesting coincidence...

>11 Jenson_AKA_DL: I guess they have something in common which makes them stand out as our favourites.
