I recently went to the Museum Félicien Rops in Namur, Belgium. The first floor is a chronological overview of his work. The second is grouped according to his disciplines: engraving, drawing and painting. There are some videos you can watch. located at various places. These are in French, sometimes with Flemish subtitles. The wall captions are generally in French, Flemish and English.
The satirical works are enlightening and give insight into some of the political and social issues that informed his work, such as his hatred of Napoleon III, his disgust at censorship of the press, his anti-clericalism, and his loathing of crinolines. He really objected to those bustles.
The most famous image seems to be Pornocratès (Some pig!), which is on postcards, posters and refrigerator magnets. There are even drawings of it made by school children. There was a booklet in the gift shop called Rops and Roll, which seemed to be for kids. Sadly, it was in Flemish. I guess Rops is a lot more respectable than he used to be.
The museum is about a 15 minute walk from the Namur train station. As an aside, there is a really nice, small restaurant close by called Parfums de Cuisine. There's one host/server and a couple people in the kitchen. It only holds about 20 people so a reservation is probably a good idea.

I was reading an essay on Przybyszewski recently in which Rops (in conjunction with the Polish author) was viewed as a scourge of the church and middle class ethics/hypocrisies who genuinely unnerved fine, decent people. Even in this century, the illustrator S. Clay Wilson,for a decade or so, riled a good many suburban mom and dad with his crude depictions of over-the-top sadism and debauchery. Now we have internet and the endless news feeds.
Thank you for this post. I think I now know where to go for my ominous anniversary next year.
