Reminds me of this rhyme that I remember from Piet Hein's Grooks (please pardon any lapse of precision in memory):
If you could know what you will know
When your candle has burnt low,
It would greatly ease your plight
While your candle still burns bright.
With hindsight over the past, say, 20 years, the real spine-chiller to me is this: what do we have so good now that we won't recognize until later?
