Almost three weeks ago I renewed a few books online. They should have been due in July, but they got dates in October. On the Monday I emailed about the bug, but it wasn't a bug. They had suddenly decided to spend the summer replacing the library carpets in the main branch, where I usually go. Most of the time half the library will be open, but it's a bit weird to think of having the fiction, craft, and travel books available, but not the children's books, the arts, or the sciences. And vice versa of course.

I made it to the library the last day before they started packing things up. I filled up my full allotment and renewed everything that wasn't already due in October.

Later that day I went to check if they had something, and the catalogue was down. Eventually we learned that the website had been hacked, some customer data had been accessed. "We are working very hard to fix the problems and get back on line." Oh, and I also couldn't sign in to my OverDrive account - because that uses the library website.

Do you know what it's like to spend over two weeks unable to access your library's catalogue? Knowing that you couldn't get to many of the books? And also not be able to check out ebooks, or even download the ones on hold that had been automatically signed out?

Today it's working again with new sign in passwords. I went crazy on OverDrive. I'm considering visiting a smaller branch next week. It's really nice not to be totally in withdrawal symptoms.

I-yi-yi! But you survived! That's the important thing. It's a cautionary tale though. You'd better beef up your home library collection, eh?

A while back, my branch library was closed for several weeks for renovations. Much-needed, but, boy, that was tough! (I actually re-familiarized myself with our main library!)

>2 2wonderY: Right. I have nearly 300 unread books in the house, besides all the ones I could reread. I might run out of reading material.

The renovation was decided only one week before they started it, and in television they told us that we would not have any problem because most books are in several branches. But they hadn't planned on shutting down the catalogue at the same time. No way to figure out which branch has a book, or much of the time even when the branches are open. This varies a lot.

>1 MarthaJeanne: Oh, what great news! I'm so glad access has been restored. That's a really long hiatus!
