This was a particularly good one. The Thames played a leading role which was very satisfying.

I missed out on the end of your last thread, Tui, so I'm happy to get in with a wish for happy reading on the beginning of this one.
I am currently resisting John Rawlings as hard as I can..... I have most of the Sir John/Jeremy series yet to read before I can legitimately try something else.

13tiffin
Aug. 13, 2019, 11:43 am

HI Paul and Peggy! Peggy, what is the Sir John/Jeremy series? I'm gulping down the John Rawlings series one a day! I almost can't wait for supper to be over so I can pit in with the next instalment.

89: Death in the Peerless Pool, by Deryn Lake

Kind of a grim subject matter in this one. I am, again, impressed by the degree of research Ms. Lake must undertake for all of her books about John Rawlings.

17tiffin
Aug. 14, 2019, 5:29 pm

90: Death at the Apothecaries' Hall, by Deryn Lake

Kindle edition

Racing around Georgian London in carriages, rowing back and forth across the Thames, while French spies and nefarious types abound is just exactly what I need right now with this series. Read on, MacDuff!

18Caroline_McElwee

I haven't heard of Deryn Lake Tui. I will give her a go.

91: Death in the West Wind, by Deryn Lake

Kindle edition

I didn't enjoy this one as much because the subject matter was a bit more raw and brutal.

I'm reading these apace while I can still give one back and get the next one for free.

20tiffin
Aug. 17, 2019, 11:58 pm

92: Death in the Valley of Shadows, Book 9 of the John Rawlings murder mysteries, by Deryn Lake

Three more to go.

21tiffin
Aug. 19, 2019, 8:25 pm

93: Death in the Setting Sun, by Deryn Lake

I didn't particularly enjoy this one. In fact, I'm only carrying on because there are only two more books left in the series. Definitely surfeited.

23tiffin
Aug. 21, 2019, 9:12 pm

95: Death in Hellfire, by Deryn Lake

Kindle edition

I like her history wrap-ups at the end of each story.

24tiffin
Aug. 23, 2019, 4:41 pm

I've reached the end of the free if you have Prime ones, I think. To be honest, I wouldn't have carried on with them if they hadn't been free. Perhaps if I read each book a month apart I might not have felt this way, but I found them very formulaic. I did like the situations she came up with, finding them creative, but Rawlings himself wasn't a sympathetic character for me. Full marks for her historical research and knowledge, however.

25tiffin
Aug. 23, 2019, 5:57 pm

96: Death and the Black Pyramid, Book 13, by Deryn Lake

There is one more to read in this series, so far, but I'm not interested enough to pay for it.

27richardderus

112: The Censor's Hand by A.M. Steiner

Kindle edition

A dark tale at times but an intriguing story nonetheless. The world of magic workers on one hand, the world of men who dole out justice on the other, and the often hardscrabble lives of those caught in between these two polarities is well written with convincing characters. I look forward to the second book in the "Thrice-Crossed Swords" trilogy but it won't be out until May 2020.

52tiffin
Sept. 25, 2019, 11:23 pm

>50 laytonwoman3rd:: I think you'd like it, Linda. Damian La Bas seeks to find the Travellers' stopping places that he has heard spoken of by his parents and grandparents. The Romany have moved past the horse and caravan days of travel but they still do travel up and down the length of Britain, as well as of Europe. La Bas kits up a relatively small commercial van that we'd associate with plumbers or heating repairmen, and starts out trying to find these not quite lost places. He discovers that the discrimination and hostility exist within his own culture, gypsy against gypsy, as well as without from non-gypsy folk. But he also discovers truths about himself as a university educated bi-cultural person who straddles three cultures: the Romany, a working class person, and an educated well read man. It's a questioning and questing memoir which I found captivating.

113: Darkdawn, Book Three of the Nevernight Chronicle, by Jay Kristoff

Kindle edition

Well, that's that trilogy done. On the whole it kept my interest but this is one nasty gory tale at times. There is the entire range of negative emotions at play here, with much stabbing, poisoning, and murdering. There is also love, and heaps of sex. And swearing. Lots of swearing. So forewarned if anyone has a delicate palate. I was able to stay inured to most of it, with the story being told offering enough sustenance to pull me along. There is a good imagination at work here in Mr. Kristoff, and I appreciated the tale he told and how he wove it all together.

114: A Brazen Curiosity, Book one of the Beatrice Hyde-Clare mysteries by Lynn Messina

Definitely of the cosy variety of Regency period mysteries. Cosy can sometimes border on not very challenging in the least but after the sturm und drang of the Kristoff books, I was ready to run up manor staircases and hide behind potted ferns.

I skipped to the 4th book because I could see where she was going, so jumped to the last one published. Sure enough she went there. She's not quite nailing the Regency period for my taste. I much prefer the Andrea Penrose books.

116: The Broken Sword, by Poul Anderson

Kindle edition

This was a reread of a book I read eons ago. Anderson captures the bloodthirstiness of the Norns, the ancient elves of Elfhaem, the Trolls of Trollheim, et al., in this riff off of Norse sagas. Much hacking and hewing with a guaranteed sad ending for all.

>60 tiffin: I read that series when the author was claiming that they had been written, but not published, in the 1920/30s and she had found them recently in an attic. I wasn't convinced and she has since admitted that she had written them. The ten stories were variable - some funny and light some rather serious - as if she hadn't decided what style she was writing in. I think I got them free or very cheap.

There is now a new series featuring a character from the later Angela Marchmont books - Freddy Pilkington-Soames - which is a light and amusing whodunit, and she has much improved.
