One hundred years ago this month Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice was first published by Robert M. McBride & Co. of New York.
There has sometimes been confusion about this date because both the first printing (September) and the second (November) give the date 'August 1919' on the copyright page. But on the copyright page for the third printing in December 1919 all is corrected: 1st September, 2nd November, 3rd December.
The first and second printings (which both say August) can be distinguished by the broken rule on p.144 in the second and the fact that the second is thicker that the first. See the Note at the bottom of this page: http://www.silverstallion.karkeeweb.com/bibliography/manuel/jurgen/kalki/jur_a1....
The third printing of December 1919 was the first ever Cabell book to display the Kalki logo on its front cover. In January 1920 all unsold copies and the plates were confiscated by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. After its vindication in court, Jurgen's fourth printing was issued in October 1922.
