Brokeback Mountain

I did a quick search to see if there was a topic on this, but may have missed it, so apologies if there is already a thread.

I just wondered what everyone thought of this book and movie? The film is probably my very favourite film of all time, and the book is great too. In the story, Ennis and Jack don't look anything like Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal (according to the book's descriptions of the characters), but my goodness, Heath and Jake made those characters their own.

The book is by Annie Proulx - I read it a long time ago, but have got it on my tbr pile again, as it is definitely worth rereading.

I never read the book, but saw the movie at the library :-) It was okay. Gyllenhaal's character was pretty alarming to me with the way he acted. Not meaning the acting was bad because I thought the acting was well done, but the character. I felt so bad for them.

I probably won't ever read the book because I try to avoid depressing stories.

This is the first case I can think of where I liked the movie better than the book! That never happens!

I read the novella before I saw the movie and I liked it, but didn't love it. I absolutely loved the film version (maybe it has something to do with my obsession with Jake Gyllenhaal). The film was just beautiful (and heartbreaking) to watch. They were robbed of the best film Oscar!

I actually can't say which I like better. I read the story first and it is one of the most heartbreaking love stories I've ever read. I love Proulx's style and prose.
And the movie... great acting and wonderful images.

This is one of the rare instances where I thought the film was better than the short story upon which it was based.

I actually liked both for different reasons. I saw the film first. After reading the story, I thought they both complimented each other. I found reading the story gave me insight to the characters that I didn't fully have with the film. I have to say, the film is one of my favourites...touching and tender without being maudlin.
