Alice’s Adventure Underground by Lewis Carroll Limited Edition 2008
This facsimile of the original hand-written and illustrated book produced by Lewis Carroll for presentation to the original Alice (Alice Liddell), with a companion book by Sally Brown, holds the distinction of being the Folio Society “Limited Edition” with by far the highest limitation (3750 copies) and conversely, the lowest price (£100).
It is a delightfully presented combination, housed in a dark green lidded box (26.5x18.3cm.) that has a gold pattern printed top and inset photo of Alice Liddell. Rather annoyingly, there is no title on the side of the box, which has a curved lid side for ease of opening, so when housed on a shelf, the edition is anonymous.
The 90 page facsimile volume (19.2x12.9cm.) is bound in dark blue goatskin with gilt cover title and ornamentation, but no spine title. 37 illustrations by Carroll, some full page, are integrated into the text. The title page is full colour, while elsewhere there are colour highlights. There is a limitation page at the back of the book, the endpapers are plain cream, and the page edges are gilded.
Sally Brown’s sewn softcover commentary (25.2x17.2cm.) is bound in light brown card printed with a wrap-around dark brown illustration. It was originally published by the British Library (where the facsimile original is housed) in 1997 and contains numerous photographs and illustrations in its 32 pages.
It is a delightful book to read to a child, and of a size that is readily held by a child with minimal chance of damage due to its sturdy structure.

>1 wcarter: thanks for posting the pics. I am a huge Alice fan ... I have several copies. My main copy is EP's DLE which I absolutely love. But I didn't know this version had that fun handwritten font ... that looks great. Might have to pick up a copy.

Its not a handwritten font, its Lewis Carroll's actual handwriting as this is a facsimile of his original manuscript.

In case anyone is not familiar with the outfit, you can also get an edition of Lewis Carroll's original handwritten manuscript from SP Books (https://www.spbooks.com/en/83-alice-in-wonderland-manuscript-9791095457664.html). The SP edition is more expensive than the FS one and isn't leather bound, but it does have a lower limitation and is still in stock.
More generally, SP have some nice looking books. I haven't bought on yet, but I see a couple that are quite tempting.

Thank you again, Warwick. I didn't know that this book even existed. I will now be on the lookout for a copy as it is just stunning and I do love children's books.

The British Library also authorised a LE of 1000 to an Australian Kickstarter company 4 or 5 years ago, with facsimile inside a black bonded leather cover. Must be a lot to choose from secondhand.

You would think so but I found the Folio LE to be surprisingly elusive. I haven't seen one under three figures for a long time. Mostly in the £100-200 range.
