East Neuk Festival.

Kate Molleson presents a selection of performances from the 15th East Neuk Festival, held in beautiful locations across the Kingdom of Fife. From Crail Parish Church, Benjamin Baker plays Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin (BWV 1004), which was written between 1717 and 1720 and consists of five movements including a chaconne which Yehudi Menuhin described as `the greatest structure for solo violin that exists". Harpist Catrin Finch brings some Spanish charm to the festival with Torre Bermeja by Albeniz, and the programme starts with the critically acclaimed Belcea String Quartet performing Haydn's String Quartet Op 33 No 5 in the relaxed surroundings of The Bowhouse in St. Monans. The first of four concerts live from Haddington in a special collaboration between Radio 3 and the Lammermuir Festival who will stream the concerts simultaneously online. Chloe Hanslip and Danny Driver team up to perform two contrasting Beethoven violin sonatas - the sunny D major sonata of his youth which is classical in form and clearly shows admiration for his teacher Haydn and for Mozart and the serene and beautiful A major sonata of 1812 written for the distinguished French violinist and guru Pierre Rode in mind. The nickname The Joke for Haydn's Op 33 No 2 comes from the composer wrong-footing his audience, especially in its sequence of false endings. Brahms and Beyond: Heath Quartet.

In the final concert from LSO St Luke's in London, chamber-music works by Brahms are played alongside those of Austro-Germanic composers who were inspired or influenced by the great Viennese master. Here, Georgia Mann introduces the Heath Quartet performing works by Berg and Brahms. Alban Berg, like his teacher Arnold Schoenberg, was very conscious of composing in the shadow of Brahms. His String Quartet Op 3, a highly expressive two-movement work, became his first big success. The programme ends with Brahms' String Quartet in A minor, Op 51 No 2. Heath Quartet. European Lockdown Lunchtimes.

Socially-distanced chamber music: a string trio by Beethove and Walter Rabl's clarinet quartet, recorded in May in the studios of Danish Radio. BBC Radio 3 has been broadcasting chamber and vocal recitals in the past few weeks from Wigmore Hall and Glasgow's City Halls - these are available on BBC Sounds. In the same way, this week. we're travelling around Europe's broadcast studios sampling the music making that has been shining out in these difficult times. This afternoon, we're in Copenhagen and the Østerbro Chamber Music Festival. From the picturesque Chapel of The House of Unitarians, we've a delightful early piece by Beethoven for strings and a rarely heard quartet by turn-of-the-century Viennese composer Walter Rabl.
