About 75% of the way through Dust of Dreams (Malazan Book 9). A little scattered. Lots of storylines with unclear connections and characters I mostly - with some notable exceptions aren't really connecting with. I know this is Erikson's schtick, but he lays it on thick here.

I finished up Song of the Crimson Flower and found it to be an enjoyable YA fantasy with a folktale tinge and a complex villain. Now I'm in the last few stories of Her Body and Other Parties, which have lovely fairy-tale influences and descriptions, even if the themes are quite dark.

I'm also working my way through Butler's Patternist series, which even in the first volume is more sci-fi than fantasy, but it's close enough to mention here.

My long Malazan journey is nearing its end, as I finished Dust of Dreams and started The Crippled God. I think Dust of Dreams was my least favorite Malazan book. Part of it might be in its role as the setup to the climax, there was a lot of shuffling pieces around. I got a bit bogged down in the new characters (or forgotten characters) and the LONG sermons/monologues from said characters. Book could have been 200 pages shorter without any loss of coherence.

>13 seitherin: I liked these, but I started reading them when they came out, before I realized she had planned a SEVEN BOOK SERIES. At first they were coming out pretty regularly every two years, but that trend ended pretty quickly... I just got excited because I thought book 4 came out today, but it turns out it's just a novella set in the same world :( Who knows when the series will be completed?

>15 curioussquared: The first three books were on sale as a bundle so I snagged them. I understand book 4 of the series is supposed to come out in February, 2021. I'm trying very hard to clear my TBR pile by rotating between current purchases as my daytime reads (which is where the Shannon books fall) and older purchases for my bedtime read. I'm old enough now that I'm not worrying much about waiting for a series to be complete.

Finished Emergency Skin by N. K. Jemisin, The Color of Angels by Terri Windling, The Forest Is Crying by Charles de Lint, and A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djeli Clark. Enjoyed them all.

>14 drmamm: I disliked hated Dust of Dreams so, so much. It killed the whole series for me. All of the times during earlier books where I stumbled and felt like things were dragging, I had a modicum of faith that it was building to something... and then we get to the Book 9, which tells you right at the start that it's "Part 1" with Book 10 being "Part 2", so I'm expecting this to be what the series was building to... and apparently it wasn't building "to" anything, but we just get a whole lot more random new (or forgotten, as you say) characters doing new and random stuff that has nothing to do with anything that came before. Such a disappointment.

>17 Niko: I will admit, the battle at the end of DoD was pretty insane. That almost made up for the tedium and confusion in the previous 800 pages.

Sort of tag-teaming the very early chapters of two books right now - wasn't sure what I was in the mood for, but wanted something fairly short that I can finish before heading out on an upcoming vacation.

- Traveling through farm-country with Dag & Fawn in Passage - the third in Lois McMaster Bujold's Sharing Knife series.

- Enjoying a lot of seafood in a modern-day New England seaside town - except transplanted to a fantasy world with Arthurian underpinnings - in Kingfisher.

Just left Harry Dresden in Chicago in Peace Talks and heading back to Chicago with Victor Bayne while re-reading Agent Bayne. Funny that two of my favorite series take place in the same city.
