Authors interviewing Readers

I have done a few interviews on some book blogs in the last few months and have always enjoyed it. But then I thought, what would I say in an interview as a reader? Solution? Interview myself!

The link didn't work, but I actually think having authors interview readers would be quite fun. (Not to mention informative!)

Maybe we could interview some readers here. I can think of lots of questions to ask them.

The last book you picked up while browsing in a library or a bookstore, what was it that made you choose that book?

Do you have a favorite place to read?

How much visual detail do you like to have? Do you think authors should be trying to paint a picture, or do you think they should just give a few telling/evocative details and let the reader fill in rest?

Which do you like better, a book that evokes a feeling of familiarity and connection, or a book that takes you to a new place? Have any of the books you have read recently done one or the other? Would you be willing to tell us about it?

What is it about your favorite genres that particularly attracts you?

I bet I could think of a ton more. :)

There. Fixed the link. I have several interviews that I did with myself, some with audio.

That made me chuckle. :)

Fantasy author Steven Brust did something similar and yet different -- for his The Phoenix Guards there is a character who is the putative author, I think his name was Paarfi, or something like that. So Steven Brust interviewed him. The two of them didn't seem quite so much on the same page as you-the-author and you-the-reader were. :)

I read part of that interview somewhere when I was thinking about doing it.

I have some character interviews somewhere on my website, from when the webcomic group I was active in at the time was playing a "ask other people's characters questions" game. In those, I was not coming up with the questions myself, and I wonder sometimes if they are more fun for me, than for readers.

When one is both the questioner and the responder, I think it might be easier to inject humor?

A few years ago I created imaginary interviews with characters from "Alice in Wonderland". That was a lot of fun. I usually have trouble doing humor, but those came out hilarious. I was rather happy with the result ;)

That sounds like a lot of fun. I don't suppose you put them up on a webpage anywhere, or anything like that?

You do seem to have a gift for making me chuckle.

Nope. Though I've been thinking of doing that. Maybe at some point, we'll see ;)

It might actually make for a fun reader magnet haha.
