Author image permissions

So the wiki article "Contributing Photos to LibraryThing" says that images which are "specifically released for general promotional use" may be used for author images. How specifically do they need to be released? Is a professionally-done headshot prominantly displayed on an author's website considered "released for general promotional use"? Or does there need to be some sort of "this image is released for general promotional use" text somewhere?

Are members who upload author images using photos from author websites (with or without a release statement), social media such as Twitter, or from Wikipedia? Does the location or presentation of the image help you determine if it may be added to LibraryThing?

well wikipedia will tell you the copyright info, and you can certainly use some of them depending on what the copyright info says.

I'll upload images from author websites, Twitter, Facebook, etc. under the assumption that they are put there for promotional use, always (well, almost always) with some form of attribution (photographer if known, or the at least the website), and what >4 lilithcat: said. As far as I know, nobody has complained yet. I prefer images from Wikipedia that are explicity credited and licensed for reuse.
