Unmatched!

I came upon this in a baseball history about the 1957 Milwaukee Braves called Bushville Wins:

But like many Milwaukee boys, his adulation for Eddie {Mathews} was unmatched.

I suppose it's theoretically possible that they each had a different kind of adulation for him? (one ecstatic, another exuberant, a third egregious...)

>2 thorold: I thought of that, too. I suppose philosophically speaking, everybody's adulation for everything he or she adulates (I had to look it up, but "adulate" is a word) is unmatched. No two cases of adulation exactly the same, comprised of the exact same elements in equal proportions.

But our fellow's adulation was only "unmatched" "like many boys." Which would mean, it seems, that all the other boys' adulation was "matched" and even, sad to say, possibly even surpassed. Of course we don't know what percentage of the young girls' adulation for Eddie was either matched or unmatched.
