Barcode scanner in the app inquiry

Hi, I go to a lot of book fairs/thrift stores and buy various books (specifically manga) for $1. Slowly with time I eventually am able to compile complete series and finally be able to read the series. Otherwise most of my books are in various stages of completion (eg. volume 1-2,5-9,11) where I haven't read a single volume yet. I previously used the Book Catalogue google play store app in conjunction/synced with Good Reads. So when out shopping and I recognized a title I collect, I just scan the barcode and for the app to tell me if I already own it or not and whether to add it or not; that way I know if I need to buy it.

So my question for LibraryThing's app is:
When I "Add to Catalog" barcode scanner is used, it brings up the the word "duplicate" if you already had that book in in "Your Catalog". Is it possible to immediately cancel that book so as to not have a duplicate listing? So far I've been having to back out, go to the catalog, click all books, select the book, scroll down, click delete, and then go back to Add to Catalog. This is annoying to do at a book fair where I might be scanning 25 various volumes of InuYasha which is a 56 volume series and I own 30 random volumes (often certain volumes are overstock so I might only get 1 new book to actually buy).

There is a button to immediately delete a newly-entered book when adding books through the website, but perhaps not in the app, I haven't tried it that way myself. Perhaps try searching your catalog in the app, instead of using the add books search? You don't get to use the barcode scanner doing it that way, but you could just type in enough of the title to bring up everything you own from that series in one go, and then compare all of the 25 (for example) possible volumes to that list.

I'm not familiar with using the app in this way, so can't help there, but for series people usually check the series pages when shopping to immediately see which parts they have and which are still missing (the ones you catalogued have a checkmark)

That would be time consuming because at book fairs, none of the books are together. I'd be typing "Inu" when I'd find one, then backspacing and typing a part of some other title, then doing it again for another, then doing Inu again when I find a second one, etc. From my old spreadsheet it says I have 374 incomplete series. It also doesn't help that a portion of them got re-printed by different publishers in different ways/with extra content; so I'd be trying to find four different volume 1's of Cardcaptor Sakura (hence the barcode importance!). And if I do find a book I don't have, then I have to flip to the add section to add it, then go back to the catalog (as I plan to buy it but where else on the table might be an identical copy and I don't want to buy two). At book fairs I usually end up buying 200 volumes.

Thank you but it is not feasible for me to do this for ~400 series or for however many series I find at a store.

>4 Yamat0: Ah, I see. Here's another idea that I think would be perfect for your needs/preferences if you're willing to spend a little extra money: you can actually search your library directly in the LT app by scanning barcodes, avoiding the add/delete routine, if you buy a mini Bluetooth barcode scanner. They're small enough to fit in your pocket, and they send the barcode digits into any currently-focused text field just as if you had typed them on the keyboard yourself, so it works in the library search field without LT providing a camera-based scanning interface for that field. There are a number of models to choose from on Amazon for around $50, some as low as $40. It's usually faster to scan with a physical barcode scanner instead of the smartphone camera anyway (not even counting the add/delete stuff), because they can work in lower light and at more varied angles and distances.

Do you know if they "override" the field when a new thing is scanned or if they add the text to the end. Like if I scanned InuYasha volume 1 the number 1569319472 pops up (which would then pop up a result as I own this volume) then I put the book down and go scan volume 13. Will the field only say volume 13's number 1569318085 or will it just mash it to the end of the previous number giving 15693194721569318085? Or will I have to click Cancel then click 'Search your Catalog' to reset it each time I scan a book?

>6 Yamat0: You do have to cancel and re-click Search, but it's just a couple taps right next to each other, much faster than the add/delete mess.

Thank you for letting me know. I'll give it whirl!
