Newspapers & Comics

I lived in a very rural area. We did get the newspaper delivered daily and from a very early age (5-6) I started to read the paper--only certain sections. I loved the comics and our daily newspaper had serialized readings, especially at Christmas. I read the serialized readings even when I really didn't understand some of the adult ones---I knew the words, but Dickens is difficult for a 6 year old! I couldn't wait for the next paper to arrive.

Some of my favorite comics were: Family Circus, Nancy, Peanuts, Beetle Bailey, Andy Capp, Blondie (and Dagwood) I didn't like the action ones like Dick Tracy or Steve Canyon.

I think I remember a Yogi Bear at one time, but I'm not sure.

What were your favorites?

Andy Capp, definitely.

I loved Steve Canyon and Terry and the Pirates. I did notice at some point that all the exotic femme fatales all looked the same.

ETA: How could I forget Winnie Winkle and Rex Morgan???

What I remember is this was my first shared appreciation with my Dad of political humor.

Gasoline Alley

I used to love my comics being delivered every Saturday and coming from Scotland (I’ve lived in South Australia since 1982) it was so good curling up in bed to read! I had The Beano, Oor Wullie, The Dandy then later on teenage ones I can’t really remember their names and music ones too. I was an only child so they along with books were my friends. Luckily my cousins lived only 6 houses along from me and my cousin also called Margaret was only 10 months younger than me so we were like sisters. They had a big family so mum would buy them all the comic yearly albums for Christmas but I’d read them all before she could wrap them up. I’ve recently retired from working in a university library a job I’d always wanted to do but didn’t get the chance until I went back to study in my early 40s. My ‘to read’ pile is huge beside my bed and I also have 3 double rows on each shelf, bookcases. One houses my antique type tiny cloth and leather bound books which I bought from our yearly book sale at work or from second hand bookstores. Sounds a bit like, Viz, the adult comic magazine from Newcastle upon Tyne which is a parody of the likes of Beano and Dandy, with comic strips such as Roger Mellie, the Man on the Telly; Johnny Fartpants; Nobby's Piles; Buster Gonad and his Unfeasibly Large Testicles; Eight Ace; Sid the Sexist; Finbarr Saunders and his Double Entendres; Brown Bottle; Felix and his Amazing Underpants; Biffa Bacon; Cockney Wanker; Farmer Palmer ("Get orf my land!"); Millie Tant; Billy the Fish; Black Bag, "The faithful border bin liner"; Spoilt Bastard; Postman Plod, "The Miserable Bastard"; Paul Whicker, the tall vicar; and The Fat Slags. It's based on the sort of British schoolboy toilet humour, sexual innuendo and double entendre which we grew up with as kids.

You have either a good memory or a copy handy to have all those to quote.

I was also a "Topper" fan. In an earlier post you mentioned the cost of comics in terms of "pence". They were priced in "d" (LSD) which was far less. Beano = 2d Topper = 3d. Expensive tastes, you see.

Anyone else have the book Tijuana Bibles by Bob Aldelman? I have it but it's not in any of my collections for LT

Dan Dare! Pilot of the Future! in the Eagle. Biggles in space really. I loved the Mekon so much :0) The epitome of the little green man from Mars. I wasnt much interested in the rest of the comic,aimed at young boys,but perhaps this was the start of a lifetime love of science fiction,still my major genre today.
There was a girls comic,The SchoolFriendwhich had a strip called the Silent Three about 3 girls at a boarding school wh solved crimes wearing green hooded robes and wearing masks.Totally bonkers idea reallybut I just loved the thought of sneaking around in the dark at midnight masked and hooded! lol.
