Cheli's 2021 ROOT Thread

Well, I met my goal again in 2020 and far surpassed it. I'm going leave my goal to 84 - 7 ROOTs per month because I'm really hoping that I get some travel in during 2021 but I'm only going if it's safe.

I've also decided that 2021 is the year to purge out books that I know I will never read so I'm aiming for one hundred there.

Goal:
E-Books/Net Galley 66 Books off my e-readers or NetGalleys downloaded to my Tablet, or Books on my PC Kindle App.
Audio books 12 - Books downloaded to my PC/MP3 or NetShelf.
ARDs 6 - Books that are already sitting on my shelves or ARCs/ERs awarded to me in 2020
Purge 100 from any source

For every ROOT successfully cleared in 2021 I put $1 in my book bank so that at the end of the year I have money for new books! I've completed my wish-list but there may be a few more before the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, I will place my order with Amazon for my e-book acquisitions and will have additional books to count. The book bank total may be added to if I receive any gift cards for Christmas. I have $105 in my book bank. I did over spend in 2020 so I need to be more frugal with my book bank dollars in 2021.

Starting Tallies:

Tsundoku (My Unread) = 171 (4 less than last year!!)
PC Downloads/MP3/NetShelf = 111 (plus 2)
NOOK = 177 (reduced 4)
Tablet/Kindle = 131 (increased 14)

STARTING ROOT TOTAL = 590 (increased 8!!!)

NetGalley/ER/ARC Awards in 2021 - 82

Total ROOTS = 677

Even though it shows my ROOTs increased 8 from the start of last year, I did clear a bunch. I acquired 124 books - 90 of which were ARCs that automatically go into the ROOT total. Leaving 34 books as new, so only an increase of 8 is not too bad, right?

ETA - books I had in 2020 but failed to catalog. These numbers will be tweaked with last day acquisitions and finally reading totals.
Considering that I added 124 books in 2020 and I have a starting total 82 less than last year's adjusted total - I have reduced my ROOTS well!

I again am aiming to read at least 50% of the new books added in the new year. I nearly achieved this in 2020
I'm starting the year with $107 in my book bank.

Once again I will be tracking how many new books enter my catalog and the target percentage to be read in the current year will remain at 50%.

Thank you for your efforts with this group.

>9 beach85: Library books are only counted as ROOTS if there were on my wishlist in the previous year. If I decide to read a book for Book Club, for instance, and it's not on my library wishlist it will fall into the valley of Undiscovered books since they are not part of Mt. TBR.

I've been looking at my TBR list a lot this weekend and have been trying to convince myself that I will get all of them read sometime. However, I know that I will continue to get more books.

The question I ask myself is..."Will I ever get them all read?" If I'm honest, the answer is no. I'm thinking about taking a reality check and eliminating books I know I will never read from my catalog as well as search my shelves and box up books for donation of those I know I will never read.

Should I do this now at the beginning of the year, wait a few months, or hold out still believing that it's possible?

I think I'm going to try to do a few each month. I went through the collection of my TBRs and tagged ones for possible deletion from my catalog and found nearly 200 that I felt I really wouldn't read. I got them either as FREEBIE or a gift they've just been sitting there, so I think I'll try to eliminate 10 a month - that would be 120 for the year.

I think I can do that.

I have done my first month's purge! 21 books that my sister Maureen gave to me when she moved 8 years ago (somewhere around there) I know that I will not read these so I'm boxing them up for donation.

I donated a bunch I knew I didn't want to read, but have struggled with dozens of undecideds. I had a plan to read 25-50 pages into each and then decide but haven't made progress on that...

Thank you for leading the group again and good luck with your own ROOTing.

>23 cyderry: Doing a monthly purge seems like a manageable way of going about it. Do you currently have any libraries or organizations accepting book donations? I had set aside a whole box of books last February to donate to my local library and they stopped accepting donations right about the same time. I look forward to the day they feel safe and comfortable with accepting donations again. In the meantime, I'll just hold onto the box. I might just change my mind about a few.

Well, I purged a few more today. After finishing 2 books in one day, I needed to figure out what was next and ended purging 8 more. That makes 29 purges so far this month along with 7 books read already!

Okay, guys, I did my February purge clearing 61 old freebies from my NOOK! 28 of those were the first in a series so I really dodged a bullet there because I would have had many more books to acquire if the series were any good. The youngest of these books had been sitting since 2017 and the oldest was from 2011, so I feel certain that I really wasn't going to read these. Yeah! I've reached my goal! It wasn't as hard as I thought.

March purges were 28 - 9 CLASSICS, that are leather-bound, were moved from TBR to the LIBRARY status (I purchased them 30 some years ago when I thought they would make a nice look in my "library" if I ever had one), 1 book that was permanently deleted because I can't find it anywhere and am not really interested in hunting it down, and 18 books from my shelves that I've decided I'm never going to read, so I'll pack them up for donation.

That puts my purge total at 118 so far this year.

This month my purge activities were related to my wish list and series.

I removed 10 books from my Wishlist and abandoned 4 series with a total of 61 books to be read. I hadn't read a book in these 4 series for a long time (2006, 2009, 2012, 2016) so I think I'm good with not seeing anymore of them.

So even though I didn't eliminate any more ROOTs I did prevent additional ROOTs from being added.

I'm having trouble with my one eye and it's caused by a cataract so I've scheduled surgery to get it removed on August 2nd. That's the soonest I could get in. However, the doctor said that I might not be able to read for a week or so. What!!! The doctor says that I shouldn't try to read with just the other eye. I didn't have the heart to tell him that that is basically what I've been doing for months. So I need to prepare by getting a bunch of audiobooks ready to go. I'm wondering if 10 will be enough.

So today I worked on my June purge. I think I did pretty good but it may come back to bite me. This month I reviewed all the audiobooks that I'd downloaded in the past in conjunction with the series that are still waiting to be read. I identified 8 series that I'm going abandon because I haven't read any of the books for some as far back as 2006 and a couple I just wasn't enjoying that much. I have marked 21 audiobook downloads to be deleted and have removed 110 books from the wishlist TBRs (series books that I won't be reading or adding to my TBRs in the future).

If I need more audios while my eye recovers, I'm going to have to hope that the library has them available for download. But I think I'll be okay since I still have over 60.

Well, something new to report...

About 3 weeks ago, I woke up in the middle of night and my ankle hurt like the dickens. I figured I must have twisted it somehow and would just rest it. But instead of getting better, it seems to be getting worse, so today I went to the doctor and he gave me this fancy new footwear. What do you think?

Good excuse to sit and read.

Well, this morning I headed back to the doctor to exchange my boot. The one they had given me didn't allow me to bend my knee. I walked into the Doctor's office carrying the boot and the technician, said "They gave you a Tall, what were they thinking?!" The new one is much better.
