Happy new year! My latest journey into fantasyland was to the Scholomance in A Deadly Education, and I loved every second of it.

Diving into a post-environmental-apocalypse version of... somewhere in the U.S., I presume, based on the previous two books... with Tool of War.

Just finished Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison. Really delightful. In a short span, she uses many classic fantasy/mythological themes, always in an original way. A slight flavor of dark cynicism, but overall lighthearted. Apparently Ursula Le Guin was very impressed with Mitchison, and I see why. You'll never see dragons or valkyries in quite the same way again.

Back in Widdershins, Mass. re-reading the Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan Hawk. My boyfriend was watching a show about Lovecraft and while watching I realized that this series had tons of Lovecraft references. I've never read anything by Lovecraft myself (not much of a straight on horror aficionado myself), but it made me want to do another re-read of the series.

Needing a comfort read this month, I'm traveling to the land of fairies and rereading The Door in the Hedge. I've forgotten how melancholy these stories can be, but it fits the current weather perfectly.

>26 Sakerfalcon: : My daughter read that recently, and then promptly asked for book 2. Maybe I'll borrow it from her next.

I'm currently in a shadow version of London, and am very much enjoying Till Human Voices Wake Us by Victoria Goddard.

Returning to Andrew Caldecott's Rother Valley with Wyntertide

-oh and I read Element of Fire and Death of the Necromancer after recommendations here. I liked Element better, but think I am ready to tackle Fall of Ile Rien generally.

I finished Mistborn The Final Empire last night. Pretty good! After Malazan and Wheel of Time (especially Malazan!) I had to adjust to a smaller-scale, more self-contained story. Once I stopped over-analyzing every sentence, I relaxed and just enjoyed the ride! Biggest positive: The ending (Sanderson is good at endings). Biggest negatives: Clumsy romance and relatively shallow characters. Vin and Sazed were well-done though. Kelsier was ok. I liked it enough to push on to Well of Ascension.
