New member and overwhelmed ... where to start

Hi there, Im a new member (probably 10 minutes in) and really don't know how or where to start. My reading is pretty varied but I tend to like historical novels, biographies, psychological or family dramas. Where to start and how to connect/talk to people? Eeek

Hi and welcome. LibraryThing is primarily a book cataloguing site, while the social aspect sort of comes second. That said, numerous book discussions happen in groups, so browse the group page or search by tags to find suitable ones you'd like to watch or join. 'Talk' is where you can see all of the discussions in one place and you can filter it to show all discussions, just discussions from groups you follow, discussions about the books you catalogued, etc.

You connect with people by sending them a friend request. You can also just mark it as 'interesting libraries'. Both of those result being able to see when those profiles add new reviews, catalogue new books, etc.

https://www.librarything.com/about outlines some basics about the site. There's also a very useful short-tour of LT, but for the life of me, I cant find it right now. Will post it later.

Also, if you're thinking that you can read books here or download them you're out of luck. You can only catalog books here.

Once you have started entering your books, you will have access to recommendations of other books you might enjoy, and you will be told which other members have libraries like yours.

BTW, Don't be insulted if people turn friend requests down. There are plenty of people here who only friend, well friends - like people they actually know, or at least have had many conversations with here.

>1 LTaylor5783: About "how to connect/talk to people"

Start in https://www.librarything.com/ngroups and find some groups that seem to be of interest. There are topic specific ones like Historical fiction: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/113/Historical-Fiction and more generic ones.

Or you can start from a book. As you had not entered any, see When the Lion Feeds for example. At the end of that table under the title, there is a "Mentions" column which will get you https://www.librarything.com/work/3434/conversations - so you can see where someone had talked about the book and you can join in newish conversations if you want.

Or you can start with the Talk page but it can be very overwhelming if you are not filtering based on something (your groups for example)

If you want to talk about what you are reading, you can use the What you are reading now in the various groups (based on topic for example) or you can choose to join one of the more generic groups and start your own thread.

So start adding your books and just follow them where they lead you. Before you know it, you will have found a place to call home around here - it always happens :) Have fun! :)

>1 LTaylor5783: Hi and Welcome to LibraryThing.

Being here no long myself, try becoming familiar with the site.
A simple step is adding books - whether you've read them or not.
Another step which I took up was joining Facebook (again).

On the top section, there is a area called Groups (home page).

Take you time with this site as it can be overwhelming to begin with. Once you get more familiar, you'll have a ball

PS: have sent you a friend request also :)
