Creating books in Cyrillic sets the Sort character incorrectly

When you manually create a book using Cyrillic alphabets (Russian, Bulgarian and so on) and leave the Sort character empty, it gets set automatically to 2.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a book manually with the Title "Тест" (these are all Cyrillic letters - use any Cyrillic letters really) No other fields need to be filled in.

The book is added. If you edit the book or look at your catalog using a style that shows the sort character, the sort character is set to 2 instead of 1.

If you select "(start)" instead of leaving the field blank when editing the book, it is set to 1 as expected.

If it is done on purpose, it needs documenting somewhere on this page so people know how to set it and (start) should also be setting it to 2. So either the initial 2 is a bug or the (start) not setting to 2 is a bug.

PS: You can see https://www.librarything.com/topic/57317#7442837 for the implication of having the sort character randomly set to 1 or 2 based on what you select and how you edit. I will opening a separate bug/question for the sorting and its position as soon as it becomes clear what is the expected behaviour on this one :)

Not just Cyrillic - it also happens with Amharic, and probably other semitic languages, when you manually enter titles. Titles imported from libraries seem to have their sort code set to 1. (I never sort alphabetically so hadn't noticed before).

I never sort alphabetically so had not noticed either but I was chasing the issue in that other thread and it kinda came up... :)

Probably all non-Latin sets are in the same boat but I tested with Cyrillic and did not want to generalize without testing :) Thanks for adding the data point!

I have some titles entered 3+ years ago that seem to have their sort character set to 2 regardless of whether they were manually entered or not - if you sort my all-books library by title, they are the last four. Two of them were manual, one from a library, one from Amazon.co.jp; three are Cyrillic, one is Han/Katakana.

In the thread AnnieMod linked above you can see people discussing that Cyrillic titles entered before 2018 seem to all have a different sort behavior than ones entered from libraries more recently; were old non-Latin entries all set to sort character 2 at some point?

Same happens with some (Polish) characters with diacritics, like Ś ; when record was added (imported from the National Library of Poland), the sort character was also automatically set to 2

Hi!
Just wondering this still is on somebodies to-do list?
Or will this be promoted to an undocumented feature? ;-)

Confirming, steps to reproduce outlined in >1 AnnieMod:.

Test added https://www.librarything.com/work/29885423/book/236075217 and seeing the sort character default to 2.
