Great New Titles (Reader's Choice 2021?)

1treereader
Apr. 8, 2021, 3:38 pm

The mailer doesn't say "Reader's Choice" anywhere but the styling suggests that it probably is this year's set. Eight (8) titles, series 3762.

The Night Horseman (Max Brand)
Red Dragon (Thomas Harris)
The Secret Adversary (Agatha Christie)
The Tale of a Tub (Jonathan Swift)
Tarzan the Untamed (Edgar Rice Burroughs)
The Third Man (Graham Greene)
The Woman in White (Wilkie Collins)
The Worm Ouroboros (Eric Rucker Eddison)

I recently started collecting again after a long hiatus, and I'm not familiar with these particular promotions. Are these typically sold as a set only, or are they also available for purchase individually?

>5 whytewolf1:
Whichever way you prefer, though, they tend to ship out over the course of a few months to a half year. They are implicitly limited but I don't think EP ever states the limitation. Some here buy the whole set, whereas others, like me, just grab one or a few titles of interest. Normally, we expect a list like this to come out each year with maybe 10-12 titles, and explicitly advertised as a Reader's Choice series.

There aren't any order codes listed. Well, at least, not on a per-title basis. This particular series is identified as 3762, so the codes should eventually come out to 3762-001, 3762-002, ..., 3762-008. One might assume that the order they're described (alphabetical by title) will line up numerically but if you try and order before finding out for sure, I'd recommend just using 3762 and the title name(s).

Not really. There's a low-resolution basic front/spine view of Red Dragon, which is all red, and the same for Tarzan (all maroon). That's it for the mailer.

I haven't bought anything directly from Easton Press before. Will these titles also be available on the website at some point? Really keen on a nice edition of The Worm Ouroboros.

I have lost my brochure and cannot get customer services to send another, because they are all working from home. Does someone have an unused one they are willing to scan (crossing out their own name) that they ar ewilling to send me?

I would like to place an order.

Thank you,

If you can’t get a scanned one, you could always just call and place an order over the phone. I ordered two of the books this way and it was really quick.

I could swear that someone posted a scanned copy of the brochure somewhere, as I distinctly remember the striking binding for Red Dragon, but I'll be damned if I can find it now. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

So, I called Easton today and ordered:

Tarzan the Untamed (Edgar Rice Burroughs)
The Woman in White (Wilkie Collins)

The good news is that I was told that once you order any of the Reader's Choice volumes, you will be put on the list to receive future solicitations for the series.

Looking back at volumes I might like to track down from recent years and then looking on ABE and eBay to try to locate copies, I discovered that titles in this series seem to be pretty scarce and when they are available, they're typically pretty pricey. So, it really seems to be a good idea to grab any of these you want as soon as they're solicited.

>22 whytewolf1: Don’t hold your breath about being put on their mailer list. I’ve ordered from the Reader’s Choice list several times (after others have posted their fliers here on LT) and have yet to ever receive the annual Reader’s Choice flyer. I’ve received their catalogs for around 20 years but never a Reader’s Choice mailer 😏

I wasn’t getting any mailers or emails a few years ago despite being a frequent customer and attempting to sign up for them on several occasions. I finally created a new email address just for EP and now I get about one a day, but still never a Readers Choice announcement. Maybe they want me to buy more expensive things.

>24 GOBOGIE: >25 jroger1: That's so odd. They're so aggressive about marketing otherwise. I wonder why they want to keep these offerings super secret. :P

Well, anyway, as long as the good folks in this group continue to post the new offerings each year, I guess it's not too much trouble to pick up the phone and order them. :)

It always seems that, eventually, if a problem is difficult enough, customer service sends the issue to Joe to solve and then it gets solved. The problem, in your case, is the disassociation between marketing and your contact info, not you calling repeatedly to get something corrected.

Sorry to ‘Joe’ for suggesting that you are the all-knowing solver of all issues at EP. The evidence is hard to ignore, though!

So, an update on the shipping of the RC selections. Veteran purchasers of this series already know this I'm sure, but for the newbies out there ( like me), it seems that these editions ship as a regular subscription would, meaning one per month until all of your selections have shipped. I happened to speak with EP customer service today about another matter, and they were able to clarify this for me.

I had ordered Tale of a Tub from EP months ago. Up until last week it said it would ship on October 12, and I was looking forward to receiving it. But now I see that they've changed it to "now accepting orders" and "this product will be available December 10." They must be having production issues.

Is anybody else put off by the Red Dragon cover design? There is a literal dragon’s head on the cover and a dragon on the spine, but this book has nothing to do with an actual dragon. There are no dragons in this book. No dragons are referred to in the book. The Dragon in the title comes from the William Blake watercolor of Satan. Now I guess I can use my imagination by understanding that Satan in great literature appears symbolically as a dragon. The Faerie Queene, which is where Blake got the idea no doubt, is an example of Satan appearing as a dragon.
I find the dragon on the cover an interesting design choice. I wonder if anyone else does.

>50 mad_yosemite: Suntup's Numbered Edition of Red Dragon comes with a "slipcase enclosure covered in a unique brocade kimono fabric with a brilliant metallic sheen" depicting what looks like red Chinese dragons. Although like you said the novel has nothing to do with an actual dragon, according to Wikipedia "Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it." Perhaps this is the symbolism both publishers had in mind for their cover/slipcase design...

On the other hand, I have recently seen a listing for a Halloween bundle of books containing Dracula, Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories and A Scarlet Letter. Speaking of judging the book by its cover/title :). I wonder why In Cold Blood was not included :D...

>52 mad_yosemite: Tiger design was taken by the signed edition of The Life of Pi. Also, you have to consider Blake's Tyger's metaphorical meaning as well as overall spiritual meaning of a tiger as an animal.

Perhaps one day, Easton Press will commit to publishing a four volume set of Hannibal Lecter books that will include all the titles - Red Dragon, Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal, Hannibal Rising...

>50 mad_yosemite:
>51 EPsonNY:

I'm late to this, but still: The Blake painting (or paintings) is one reference in the novel, the other is to a Chinese character used on a mah-jong tile, which is called Red Dragon. The character who identifies with Blake's Great Red Dragon uses that symbol. It is also used on the numbered Suntup edition. The Asian dragons on the slipcase make sense in the mah-jong context and due to the fact that the character is influenced by his experiences in the Far East.

All that being said, while the design of the Suntup edition makes sense, the one by Easton Press does less so. It looks more like fantasy dragons than either reference from the novel.

Unfortunately, I opted out of the annual Reader’s Choice titles from 2021 due to the price increase. I had been buying these for years and really wanted four of the 2021 titles but can’t justify spending $85.95 per title especially with the current economy!

That number sounds high. Was that the regular price - the one everyone sees by the time it hits the website? I thought the early order price was lower…
