> It appears that EP has sort of listened and albeit in a different format has re-published Michaud's History of the Crusades "featuring all 100 of the Gustave Doré illustrations from the rare original first edition:"

Okay, this is confusing...
EP had released a Deluxe Limited Edition back around 2007 or so.
EP said they would not reproduce DLEs, and yet... ??

Here are some more pictures of the DLE

>3 astropi: ok they made it as a regular edition this time around but included all Dore illustrations. FS did that with Lovecraft limited and regular edition, etc

Yes, FS Devotees are upset about FS doing the same thing — reproducing popular LEs but in a smaller size or with a different cover. Apparently EP is starting to do the same thing.

They’ve done the reverse before, taking a normal sized Dore Bible and turning it into a DLE. Same thing with Idylls of the King.

It’s much smaller this time.

This is why I've always struggled with EP's entire DLE concept. The difference between a standard issue item and a DLE is oftentimes little more than a color and/or layout change of the cover. Except in the cases where the the DLE is noticeably better illustrated, there isn't really a difference because the materials are the same. In this particular case, the illustration set appears to be the same, so literally, they just changed the cover and can get away with a new/non-limitation of the same thing.

Unless I'm missing something more profound???

I've been on the lookout for EP's Dore Crusades DLE for a few years, but it's almost always $1,000+. As attractive as the DLE is, the additional cost on the secondary market makes me consider picking this new one up instead.

With this as well as Les Mizerables, it looks like EP might be beginning to re-release some of its expensive DLEs as standard editions -- most significantly, with no stated limitation. This would be a controversal move, but it's probably a profitable one from EP's perspective.

Obviously, the new book is quite a bit smaller than the old DLE, but the covers are different too. Old DLEs like Ovid, Divine Comedy, and London have very impressive covers with heavy beveled boards, deep gilt embossing, and masterful layouts -- no doubt very expensive to produce. The Crusades DLE reproduced the gorgeous 19th Century cover design of the facsimile source, while it appears that this re-release has a kind of bland and modern cover. EP might be trying to placate DLE collectors with standard cover designs on re-releases as well as smaller sizes.

In my opinion, it is desirable for a 19th Century book to have a 19th Century cover design; thus, the old DLE maintains its prestige as a collector's item.

The DLE is twice as big and has a much nicer binding. I’m happy with the DLE, I wouldn’t purchase the standard edition and it doesn’t both me that EP published the latest edition.

Hi everyone, this is an interesting choice for EP. I believe there was a Dore edition of the Divine Comedy released many years ago. Does anyone have any information if EP is planning to re-release it in a new DLE version the same way they released Michaud's Crusades?

>9 kdweber: Kinda feel the same. This DLE is a personal favorite of mine. I search for several years before I found a perfect set online. Not cheap but I’m a very happy. Dore’s illustrations are next world IMO.

Has anyone here read the Michaud text, and what do you think of it? The Dore illustrations are, of course, magnificent.

>10 Gilded_Tomes1: I'd be amazed if EP didn't give their Dore Divine Comedy a similar treatment eventually. It's got to be their most widely sought-after DLE.
