What comics are you reading, July to September 2021?

A few interesting things read recently:

Onion Skin, a Mexican graphic novel in English translation. A fun food truck romance adventure story, in a groovy loose drawing style.

Now: The New Comics Anthology #10, another strong collection from Fantagraphics.

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen?, confirms I am not a DC guy (did you know that Metropolis and Gotham City are two different cities?), but I've liked Matt Fraction's writing at Marvel so I gave it a try. Good gonzo fun.

The Crumrin Chronicles Vol. 1: The Charmed and the Cursed. I love this series and I'm glad there are new stories.

Read a couple this weekend:

It's Not What You Thought It Would Be, a gentle but moving series of episodes following two best friends from childhood into adulthood.

Hilda and the Black Hound. My wife and I were charmed by the Netflix animated series, so I selected this volume at random from my LCS. The original comics are just as charming, and the animated version is very true to the original.

I've been trying to climb out of a reading slump, but I did pick up a few comics at the library this month at random.

Sex Death Revolution by Magdalene Visaggio (A solid standalone trade about a witch fighting to keep control of her identity.)

Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn by Amanda Conner (Fun but I'd rather watch the Harley Quinn cartoon, I think.)

On Ajayi Crowther Street by Elnathan John (A drama centering on a family in Nigeria and their neighbors.)

Well, without causing too much shock to your system, the rest of the major superheroes also have their own cities on their own ;)

In other news, DC Unlimited is really bad for one's system. I had been eyeing it for awhile so decided to try it over the weekend - and it has a lot more stuff than I expected. While it does not have every single comics DC and friends ever published, it has quite a lot.

Which of course means that I need to decide where to start from catching up - I had been planning on a big long read through for years so the big question is if I start after the first crisis or if I first work up to it (yeah yeah, I know that there are later places to start but with all the shuffling around, things come back from way back when plus I actually like a lot of the older stuff).

So while I was trying to decide that, I checked a few of the newer ones:

- "Icon and Rocket: Season 1" (issues 1 and 2): a reboot for the old Milestone characters. I had not read the original comics but so far, the series is readable.

- The 2 new anthologies: "Batman: Black and White" and "Legends of the Dark Knight" (nope, you do not suffer a deja-vu, they reused the familiar titles for the new series), are off to a good start as well - I did not love every single story in the first one (but there are a lot of stories per issue) and the second one is not Earth-shattering either but they both work so far (3 issues from Black and White and 4 and a half (Online first so half issues are published before they get printed) from the Legends are available online).

And then I got stuck in Silver Age Green Lantern (because why not) so... I guess I am starting there for now at least. I may jump a bit - or I will be still catching up a decade from now but we will see.

>4 AnnieMod: Aargh! Marvel's use of real cities (primarily NYC) is so much easier! (We won't mention Genosha, Wakanda, Latveria, etc.) Anyway, I was just drawing attention to my near-total ignorance of the DCU :-)

>6 edgewood: Well, yes. But it makes it much harder to believe that they don’t just bump into each other all the time. Plus leveling down NYC every year does not work very well; over in DCU there is always at least one of the big cities or at least a big part of it being destroyed and getting rebuilt :)
