Absolutely. I have been waiting quite sometime for a DLE for this title. It doesn't show up when you search it in the website just yet, maybe tomorrow, and hopefully along with other titles 🤗

When I checked out after ordering it, I was offered an oversized “The Raven DLE” with Dore illustrations for $445, but it doesn’t show up in a search either.

No, that edition was actually published by Chartwell. Easton merely put leather covers on some of them and marketed them. It was a nice product, though, good enough that I won’t need the DLE since the illustrations will be the same.

According to something I read — I don’t remember what — Dore was putting the finishing touches on his Raven illustrations when he died.

This DLE looks like a must-get. Salvati's artwork looks great! Fwiw, this is the same artist who provided illustrations for the Atlas Shrugged DLE.

I don't know how you found it but thanks! Can someone please tell me the reason for the higher price? 445 for a poem is a bit steep, so I need convincing before I splurge. BTW, I'm a huggggeeeee Poe fan so it won't be too hard, LOL

>2 fancythings: Will you be purchasing the Moby Dick? I'm on the fence about this one, as the slipcase picture is a bit off-putting with the zoomed-in face of Ishmael (Or is that Captain Ahab?). You have a gorgeous DLE collection and was wondering if this volume will be added to your collection :-)

Lol thank you. I’ll share the secret so that everyone else can be awesome too. It’s social media ads, I probably visit EP website 2-3 times a day if not more, it’s relaxing and I do it mostly to take a break from work. So, when I open up my facebook app, for example, scrolling down through the app I get EP ads, and it has happened more than once to me that I will see a title that is not yet live at the EP website, but of course only when the title is about to be displayed on the website i.e. next day or within two days. This time I saw Moby Dick DLE, The Raven, Red Dragon, along with a few others that, as of now, are already live.

Huge fan of Moby Dick, this is tempting...
Although there's also the LEC edition, which is very expensive in any decent condition. Then there's the Lakeside Press edition, which costs an arm and a leg if you can find a copy, then there's the amazing Arion Press edition which costs both sets of arms and legs...

I feel like we should reward Melville with some posthumous royalties.

I read Moby in high school and loved it. I read it again at around 40 and still loved it. But I picked up the FS edition last year and became impatient with all the digressions, so I stopped halfway through. This new edition with the new illustrations, though, may be just what I need to love it again.

I know you weren’t asking me but I loved it. A bit long but the good ones usually are 🤓

I’m on the fence about this DLE. This was the first EP book I purchased some 25 yrs ago. I reread it last year. It took some stamina for sure and Melville likes to tell a story with details, but with a couple rest breaks I made it.

Please post pictures fellas whenever your copies show up!

>31 GOBOGIE: I like this DLE and watercolor illustrations. But, just like you I struggled with it. I also finished it after taking multiple breaks and reading other books in between. In the end, it beats every school book, and I would read Moby Dick over my school books any time, any place.

The other thing is that I’m not a fan of watercolors for the most part. That being said I love the painting of Queequeg listed on EP’s sale page. That and the book is my favorite color - Blue!

Hence my struggle on this one

Guys, this looks pretty clearly to me to be oil on canvas illustrations. These are not watercolors.

35jroger1
Sept. 17, 2021, 8:37 am

>34 whytewolf1:
You are correct. Wikipedia reports that Salvati prefers oil:

"My paintings are extremely thick and layered. I love how experimental oil allows me to be. I can keep the colors moving until I like what they have done to the piece."

>28 astropi: thought you already had a decent Rockwell Kent edition. The faithful Folio LEC was THE edition to get IMO but their Buckram edition is beautiful too. The Franklin library edition is gorgeous but does not include all of the Rockwell Kent illustrations. I opted for the leather bound Millennium edition with all the Rockwell Kent illustrations and quite frankly cannot imagine a better edition.

>38 HugoDumas: No, I wish I had the Lakeside Press edition, but right now I don't have any "nice" editions of Moby Dick. If you're just looking for a nice and inexpensive edition, I think you could do much worse than the Easton Press reprint of the LEC. My favorite edition is still the Arion Press, which is insanely expensive of course but I had the pleasure of holding a copy in my hands and it's majestic -from the opening page that typography and illustrations just sweeps you in...

The Rockwell Kent illustrations are wonderful, but I never liked the spine of the Folio Society edition. My version of Moby Dick is the 522-page Franklin Library, black leather-bound edition published in 1974, the one with a ship embossed on the cover. It was part of the 100 Greatest Books of All Time series. I think it has an understated beauty all its own, and it's in excellent condition. Most chapters begins with (what I suppose to be) an engraving of a nautical scene, superimposed with the first letter of the chapter in large font.

There is no illustrator named. I don't suppose anyone can shed light on the illustrator of this particular edition?

Edited to add: here is a link to a current offering of this version, found on ebay (I have no connection):

>40 Betelgeuse: there are "Notes from the Editors" booklets for each of the volumes in the Franklin Library 100 Greatest series which should have that info.

I have been thinking about trying to crowd-source an effort in the Franklin Library Collectors group here to gather this metadata (illustrator, translator, paper, etc.) all in one place. I have a few of the editors booklets, but unfortunately not the one for Moby-Dick.

I have the "Notes From the Editors" for Moby Dick from the 100 Greatest Books of Al time from Franklin Library. The illustrations were created by Ronald Keller.

>45 astropi:
Given the publication year, it is more likely to have been Richard Nixon. However, I suspect it might be a nod to the actor Richard Basehart, who played Ishmael in the 1956 motion picture version of Moby-Dick, starring Gregory Peck.

Another possibility is that it is a self-portrait of the illustrator, Ronald Keller, who died at the age of 90 earlier this year:
