I read this book years ago, back in the late 90's. Could have been anywhere from '95 to '00.
It is a standalone adventure fantasy book, I had a hardcover copy, not a series.
The main character was an antihero, a male theif i think. He ended up being able to shadowshift (was able to dissapear into shadows/become invisible)
He had a mentor/sidekick who was a small person with red hair and an accent, I think named Archie, which in the end was revealed to be short for Reginus C*****something which made the main character laugh.
There was a female companion who was a druid or similar, she has a staff I think? I remember her healing a party member when hurt.
I think there is also an old wizardry guy. And maybe a knight?
They all band together and they are looking for a stone that was used by a hero that was long since presumed dead, but he ends up being someone in their party who is immortal.
I remember the antihero falling off a cliff to his possible death at the end but I seem to recall it being a redeeming moment as he was sacrificing himself for his friends.
I think it was aimed at a YA audience.
There also could have been a bit about a traveling Gypsy caravan?
Magic was common in this universe. The magic stone could have been in a ring that made the protagonist able to hide in a shadow dimension.
The book begins with all the characters already as adults but not all knowing each other, no starting as a child like in the Brent weeks shadow assassin trilogy.
There could also have been quite a bit about different guilds in the city before they set off.
Please, if you have any suggestions, I'll look them up! Please help me

This sounds a lot like Villains by Necessity by Eve Forward. (I just read it and a couple minor details are off, but there's a lot of overlap; I'm pretty certain this is it.)

Antihero was assassin Sam. Short sidekick with red hair was thief Arcie, whose name at the end is revealed to be something more long-winded. Druidess was Kaylana. There was also a dark sorceress in their party named Valeriana (later shortened to "Valerie") and Sam does later gain the ability to shadowshift by stealing a necklace with a stone in it from her. They are seeking several stones hidden in various tests to combine into a key to reopen the Dark Portal and allow Evil back into the world, as Good finally triumphing over Evil had upset the cosmic balance and was going to bring about the end of the world. There was a bit with travelling caravan with fortune-teller, and the former hero that ends up being part of their party is in there as well (the silent black knight, Blackmail).

The wizard guy is elf Mizzamir, the "hero" who is their antagonist and is trying to stop them from reopening the Dark Portal. There's also a centaur named Robin who joins the group and is a spy for Mizzamir, if that rings any bells. There are thieves/assassins' guilds and Sam does plummet to his almost-death near the end.
