I don’t know if it’s even a mystery.
The gist is some kids are trying to start a club of some sort. They’re told the school doesn’t have the budget, which is weird because when the kids look at the budget, they see an absurd amount of money going… somewhere.
The big reveal is that an authority figure is embezzling.
The part that I most pointedly remember was one specific conversation close to the end:
Character 1: We’ll call you Deuce.
Character 2, disappointed: like second
1: no, like deuce ex machina because you saved the day
Or something similar to that

Maybe? I thought it was from Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie but I recently reread it and it wasn’t.
