LEC Plutarch

This set seems to be hard to find for sale, especially in good condition. Is anyone selling it? If not is there anywhere worth watching for listings besides eBay and Abe? Thank you!

>1 jparker8543: I assume you've already seen the $495 USD option on Abe and the same one on eBay for $594 USD/best offer, the one with the speckled spines? If indeed the interior is in fine condition as stated, that doesn't seem like a bad deal to me, as the covers are relatively uninteresting to begin with.

In answer to your main question, I'd check vialibri.net also, though I find it rarely has many more or appealing options than the other two platforms. In this case, it does reveal a cheap option for volumes 5-8 though my guess is that an incomplete set is not something you would be interested in.

Maybe leave a want with a reputable bookseller?

>2 abysswalker: I did see that set, and messaged the seller as well! They said it wasn’t mold (no odor) but that otherwise the speckling doesn’t seem to be cleanable - which seems a deal breaker to me. I’m new to collecting these books though, so your more experienced opinion on whether the condition is ACTUALLY unpalatable would be really helpful to me. Could I maybe have dust jackets made? I’m just not really sure.

Frankly, my advice is to be patient. As a fellow collector who greatly values a pristine original binding, I've come across (and in some cases acquired) multiple LECs only fabled to still exist in fine condition: Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire, Hamlet, War & Peace, the very same Plutarch, Candide, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Black Tulip, etc.

Make daily rounds on eBay, ABE, the LEC FB groups, ViaLibri, Oak Knoll, and so on and you're bound to come across a coveted title in your preferred state within a couple of years tops.

That said, sometimes it does pay to acquire a beautiful work in a soiled binding as a value play; I've done this with The Wind in the Willows and the 1931 Iliad/Odyssey set, which are in very good condition at best.

Also, as the Walker of the Abyss mentions, the binding isn't the highlight of the LEC Plutarch so it may be worth it to you to consider whether the interior is in fine condition and if that in itself is worth a compromised exterior. In certain cases, such as the fabulous paper used for Hamlet or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, this easily applies; it may also apply to beautiful typefaces, letterpress execution, illustrations, or page layout.

Earlier this year I sold my Limited Editions Club Plutarch in Fine condition, intact slipcases and original glassines on eBay for $375. I would advise patience if condition is important--as >4 PatsChoice: says, they are out there.

>5 Django6924: If that’s the case then the current offerings are certainly overpriced. Patience it is then!

As an update, I managed to finally land a quality set! Does anyone have a copy of the monthly letter? I think it’s number 136. The one on the monthly letter drive doesn’t mention anything about the production…

>2 abysswalker:
I actually bought that cheap half set for 75 bucks - thanks! - and subsequently found a set missing one of the volumes the former did have (and lacking slipcases) for 110 bucks and consider myself lucky! I let the seller keep the three surplus volumes to sell as best able… Now I just need to find an orange slipcase of roughly the right size.
