Hubby signed me up for this (Thank you!!). Over the years I have received over 90 installments (some with two or three books), and I haven't read all the books yet. Not even close! Ummm...obviously I need to work on this category next year...
Let me know if any books interest you (ones I haven't read yet)! Beth, Ellen, Stasia, Bill and Paul are in for at least some of the ones listed below.
2022 Challenge
January -- Red Clocks by Leni Zumas
Other 2022 potential reads....

Your Duck is My Duck by Deborah Eisenberg
The Blazing World by Siri Hustvedt
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra
The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne
The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead
The complete list can be found here and I'd love to have some friends do some group reads with me in 2022. Suggestions?

I can't resist buying books!!
I seem to manage to read around 50% of my newbies, except in 2019 where I (ahem) added a few more books to my collection than normal. But then in 2020 I killed it and read almost 75% of my newbies!!
2017 47/85
2018 45/88
2019 45/128
2020 78/103
Let's see how I do this year...

saw you read The Bloody Chamber a favorite of mine from Angela Carter. ( I got my book club to read Nights at the Circus this year.
I think even my eight year old mind knew that those "fairy tales" were all about blood and guts and gore - and sex. Carter's book was "Yes. Right. I told you so"

Hello Kim my dear, Happy New Thread. I think you have beaten me on the book reading my dear, i should hit 75 by year end. I hope that you are just about ready for the big day on Saturday and that Walt has got you something nice.
We are ready, the presents bought and wrapped, the food has been bought and as Karen is working until 5pm on Christmas Eve, i will have some jobs to do and then it will be a nice steady evening with a glass of something ready for the following day when they all descend on us. It will be lovely to see Elliott's first Christmas Day.
Sending love and hugs from both of us to you and all the family my dear friend.

So, here is my idea for reading more books off the shelf...wish me luck!
Using dice...
First dice -- even for upstairs or odd for downstairs
Second roll (random 1 or 2 die) -- which pile/bookcase
Third roll (random 1 or 2 die) -- count this many books in

Well, the holidays were not what they were supposed to be. Just to be safe, all my family members took at-home COVID tests and sadly my daughter tested positive on Christmas Eve. And I had spent the previous day with her, masked since she had been traveling to North Carolina, but still. Christmas at our house was off!! So...Christmas morning we set up tables in our garage with names for each person labelling a space for them and we had everyone drive up to our house and take turns running into our garage to grab their presents and leave ones for other people. And also grab portions of all the food I had cooked: yam soufflé, stuffing, ham, beef tenderloin, pie, cauliflower mash, etc. Then they all headed back to their respective homes and we zoomed opening presents. It was insane and not as wonderful as in person, but we still managed to have fun.
And, in case you were worried, today my daughter is already over all her symptoms, experienced on Christmas day, which were only a mild headache and the sniffles.
I hope everyone else also managed to celebrate the holidays despite you know what!! : )

>78 Berly: That is rotten luck, Kimmers.
This Omicron variant, does I'll admit, conflict me a little. On the one hand it is quite possibly a Godsend if it is such a weakened variant that hospitalisation is rare and death extremely unlikely. This means that we may be able to finally live with the virus.
On the other hand it appears to be a highly contagious form and arrived on the scene at precisely the wrong time.
The injections appear to have been extremely successful at ameliorating the symptoms to a much safer level (and I am relieved to be double jabbed) whilst at the same time not being so effective in immunisation terms possibly because of virus variants. I do wish Mr. Biden would desist from saying that people cannot catch the virus if they have been vaccinated because this is palpably false and not the claim of the CDC.
It would seem that the Merck and the Pfizer pills may eventually be the way to deal with this over time as I don't see that the world population is going to submit to boosters every few months indefinitely into the future. It could come, however, with a modified code of social interaction and the "touchy-feely" amongst us may be less popular than before!
Hope your daughter will be quickly recovered and that your tests will be negative.

I sincerely hope that hugs and kisses will not be on the way out socially, but we'll have to wait and see. I am listening to Fauci's medical advice, not Biden's. Sigh.

My collection is now complete!! Happiness. : )

Our group read continues with #10 by Viveca Sten, "Buried in Secret," to be published January 11, 2022.
When do we want to read this one? : ) Prefer not January...February?

BTW, Kim - how are you going to do all of the Indie books? Just one thread - the one that the list is on - or a thread for each book?

>99 Berly: That is a most amazing book imho. His wife and mentor visited Chautauqua when the book came out to talk about it. What an amazing group of people!!
Sorry to hear your daughter got Covid but glad it seems to be a very light case. How like you to turn the solution into a fun day anyway!!

Oh, Kim I'm so sorry your Christmas plans were disrupted but glad you managed to make something good from it - and that your daughter is doing well despite infection.
114Berly
>111 alcottacre: Funny you should ask about that...
So, my friends (like you) have been kind enough to help steer me in the direction of Red Clocks for a January read. Since I hope to read several books from my INDIESpensable collection in 2022, and I'd love to have some discussion, I think a thread per book might be warranted. Anyone interested, please join us!!

Hi Kim my dear, so sorry to read that your Christmas plans were disrupted but you did manage to make the best of it. We had a lovely day with Elliott as the star, he loved his first Christmas Day both the presents and the food, bless him.
Andy's mum and dad know us well though and they gave us a Ringtons gift set of tea, coffee and lovely Ginger biscuits.
I have just begun my 75th book of the year and will finish it before midnight on Friday.
Sending special Yorkshire love and hugs to you and all the family from both of us dear friend.

A lovely gift of tea! And, yes, they know you. LOL. And I am glad you got to spend the day with Elliott.
I am confident you will reach the magic 75 in time.
Hugs to you and Karen. : )

Hi Kim! Sorry to hear about your COVID Christmas, but glad you tested negative! We ended up having one of those too -- details on my thread, but basically we had Christmas Even with about 10 family members and then my brother tested positive Christmas morning. Now we're all quarantining. Fun!

>147 Crazymamie: The threads are just slow right now. In my case, it is the ThreadMeister that's slow. I'm pooped from the festivities, and believing that's not enough (I guess), I came up with an infection around my right eye. Not impacting the eye or my vision. But the bag under that eye has grown into a suitcase. It's just annoying. I got checked and have an antibiotic I'm taking.

Sorry. I was just making conversation. It's weird to me because normally the new threads are flying as soon as they are up but this year things are slow.
159Berly
>158 Crazymamie: Please keep right on talking! : )
And I know the threads are slow because I am keeping up!
My project for this afternoon is to go through all the books by my night table and re-prioritize. Some of them have to go because the pile is taller and wider than the furniture. LOL. I also have to find the books I intend to read in January.

So my Thingaversary was December 2nd (joined 2008), but 13 books is a lot to buy all at once, so I am spreading my rewards out. I ordered Cove, which Ricardo rated a 5 out of 6 and told me to get and I always do what I'm told (when I want to). It should come next week. Also, according to my rules, any book I received this year automatically becomes a book off my shelf on January 1st. : )

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi 5.0
Okay, this is definitely one of my favorite reads for 2021, and perhaps THE favorite. Paul is a young neurosurgeon diagnosed with lung cancer and these are his musing on life, family, why he became a doctor and death. I bookmarked so many passages...here are just a few:
...only 0.0012 percent of 36-year-olds get lung cancer...It occurred to me that my relationships with statistics changed as soon as I became one.
In fourteenth-century philosophy, the word patient simply meant "the object of an action," and I felt like one. As a doctor, I was an agent, a cause; as a patient, I was merely something to which things happened.
Paul's wife: "Will having a newborn district from the time we have together?" she asked. "Don't you think saying goodbye to your child will make your death more painful?" "Wouldn't it be great if it did?" I said.
...knowing that even if I'm dying, until I actually die, I am still living.
This is not the end...or even the beginning of the end. This is just the end of the beginning.
This book is not all doom and gloom, rather it embraces life and love. It's about family and passion, wanting to do right by people, and, yes, even the love of literature. It is beautiful and haunting. A must-read. (Thank you SS Weird_O)

And wish you a special new year.
