Cheli's (cyderry) 75 thread for 2022

1cyderry
Jan. 1, 2022, 12:36 pm

Hi, I'm Chèli, I've been a member of 75ers since 2009. I still need to visit my own thread more often, I will try but these books keep getting in the way!

Most of my time on LT is centered around the Category Challenge (which is what got me hooked on LT in the first place) and as the leader of the pack when it comes to ROOTing - Read Our Own Tomes - a group where we make a conscience effort to read the books that have been sitting on our shelves for too long - the shelves can be actual or virtual. So come and join us if your shelves are sagging under the weight of unread books!

I love to read and I better get to it! 2021 saw my TBRs reach 677. Totally out of control!!! I decided that it was time for a reality check so I went through and purged books that I agreed with myself I would never get to read. I did pretty well because my TBRs are now ONLY 408. Since I increased my reading rate (I read 174 books in 2021) I might be able to read all these in 3 or 4 years but only if I don't get any new books and ARCs. Fat chance of that happening. I guess I'll just have to keep suffering through, spending my time reading when not involved with family and friends.

2021 was my best reading year ever. I normally read about 10-12 books a month but in 2021 I was reading more like 15 a month. I was making a conscience effort to catch up on series that had been lagging behind and by targeting them, my reading numbers skyrocketed! I'm sticking to the same plan for 2022 just selecting different series and authors.

Wishing everyone a healthy, peaceful, and good book filled 2022.

>2 PaulCranswick: I have actually learned to do several of these.

If I don't like a book by page 60, I abandon it - there are far too many books on my shelves waiting to be read.

I learned once when I ended up at the hospital with my Mom that not being prepared with reading materials was horrible. Now I always have at least 2 books downloaded to my phone.

Don't understand the one about airplane mode?

Once a week I visit NetGalley to replenish my books hopefully (not that I'm running out)

Talk with my reading friends frequently for more Book Bullets!

Hope you have a great year of reading! I think airplane mode saves your battery and causes fewer distractions (notifications, etc.)

Finished my leftover from 2021 - Because of Miss Bridgerton. An enjoyable romance but lacking a bit of the steam from the original Bridgerton series. Maybe it will heat up in the next installments.

Usually on New Year's Day I take a few moments to thank God for the many blessings that had in the prior year and to ask HIM to watch over all my family and friends in the new one.

Today I found this poem and realize that it says what I feel.

Drinking from My Saucer
by John Paul Moore

I’ve never made a fortune and it’s probably too late now.
But I don’t worry about that much, I’m happy anyhow.
And as I go along life’s way, I’m reaping better than I sowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

I don’t have a lot of riches, and sometimes the going’s tough.
But I’ve got loved ones around me, and that makes me rich enough.
I thank God for his blessings, and the mercies He’s bestowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, ’Cause my cup has overflowed.

I remember times when things went wrong, my faith wore somewhat thin.
But all at once the dark clouds broke, and the sun peeped through again.
So God, help me not to gripe about the tough rows that I’ve hoed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

If God gives me strength and courage, when the way grows steep and rough.
I’ll not ask for other blessings, I’m already blessed enough.
And may I never be too busy, to help others bear their loads.
Then I’ll keep drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

My only problem is in reality I usually use a mug. LOL

Tim and I took a "vacation" to South Carolina the end of February. While we were there we took care of some "business". We were trying to decide where we wanted to move once Tim finally retired.

The trip was a success! We've officially decided to retire to South Carolina and will be having a house built either in Myrtle Beach or Murrells Inlet. It all depends on the lot availability. We expect to move sometime late 2023 or early 2024. Now I have to start clearing out all the stuff/mementos/knickknacks in this house!

>26 Berly: Kim, right now we are waiting for the building permits to be issued. The sales person says it could be a few more months. Once that happens then they will break ground and frame the house out. I am scheduled to have my knee replaced on June 20th so I'm actually hoping that they don't get to far ahead so that I would have to miss the framing walk-through. This is what our "little" cottage will look like except the siding will be a spruce green.

In the meantime, up here in MD my husband, Tim and I have started the elimination of items that won't be going with us to SC. We've lived in this house for nearly 37 years and there is a lot to go through. I took 50 books to my sister a few weeks ago (she hurt her hand and can't work and had nothing to read) and Tim worked at clearing some items out of the garage so that we'd have a staging area for boxes.
Today we worked at cleaning out our walk-in closet of clothes that we probably won't need as much in SC. I kept a few sweaters and my fleece lounging PJs thinking that up here when it's really cold I usually don't go out anyway.

I've been inventorying the furniture, pictures on the walls, small appliances - that kind of thing and determining if it goes with us or if it gets donated, sold, or thrown away. Once I've figured out what's not going, then I'll check with family members to see if anyone wants freebies before I start disposing of what I don't need for staging.

Any furniture unclaimed will be going to either Habitat for Humanity or the Salvation Army. I don't really have any furniture that needs to be "trashed" just re-homed.

This week, however, the move activities for me are on hold because I need to get packed (make sure I have enough books with me) because Tim and I are hitting the high seas on a cruise to the southern Caribbean. We had it planned for last year but COVID made us postpone. When I get back, I'll be repacking for a long weekend with the grandkids in Richmond - it's dance recital time! I'll also get to spend my birthday with the kids for the first time in a long time. Then of course, I'll be doing the run around getting all the pre-op tests and appointments taken care of.

I actually think I'll be ready to take the time to let my knee heal and read some books!

Thanks for asking - I'll try to keep you up-to-date as things progress.

May was pretty busy for me - start of preparations for my knee replacement surgery (scheduling all sorts of appointments), 10 day vacation cruise to the southern Caribbean, a return to an anniversary celebration (48 years with the sweetest man on earth), a short road trip to see 2 granddaughters in their dance recital, my birthday celebration and finally home to more appointments!

I still managed to read 14 books! Not all great but I did enjoy most.

Well, it's been 6 weeks since my knee replacement and there still some tough, painful moments (like steps taken on the wrong foot) but the doctor today said that I was doing great and was farther along than most people at 6 weeks!

Other good news is that house has been started! The slab was poured last week and now we are waiting for the trusses so that framing can begin!

on the reading note, I just realized that I have not posted any of the books that I have read this year. I will remedy that immediately.

Hope everyone is staying cool.

Well, I was progressing in my recovery pretty well, until I took a ride (1500 miles total in 5 days) to pick out all the finishes and options for the new house. Needless to say, I was hurting by the time I got home. My sweet husband was brilliant in that he brought an ice bag along on the trip so whenever he could get it refilled, I had ice in the car. My knee was swelling again and fortunately, I had no PT scheduled for several days. I spent most of them with my leg elevated with ice. Saw the doctor again last week, and he advised I not make the trip again for awhile. Tim went back this weekend without me. Thanks to technology I was able to be on the framing walkthrough remotely.

I had a very good reading year in 2022 despite a few bad months where I read less than 10 books.

Total books checked off as read - 152
Here is how they broke down.

15 Series Started
13 second in the series
13 third in the series
75 deep into the series
30 series current as of 12/31/22

15 abandoned books - either couldn't get into it or bad writing
8 new purchases $49
77 new freebies - NetGalley and BookBub

52 audiobooks
99 ebooks
1 paperbook - old secondhand book about rationing in WWII. I really need to try to finish some of those paper books I still have.

Those I did read were ranked as follows:
1 ★★★★★ star book - hadn't had one since 2016
4 ★★★★½ star book
58 ★★★★ book
48 ★★★½ star book
21 ★★★ books
20 less than ★★★ stars

BEST OF THE YEAR
Lost Coast Literary
Evil Woman
Three More Months: A Novel
The Arsenal of Democracy: FDR, Detroit, and an Epic Quest to Arm an America at War
The Darkest Year: The American Home Front
Only the Good Die Young would have been a 4.5 star except it was too short! I wanted more!

Now on to 2023 and more books!
Wishing everyone great reads in 2023!
