Hi! I’m Staci from NJ. I’ve been a not so active member of this group for many years now. I was thinking that I would not join again this year because my reading has taken a giant nose dive over the past few years, but have recently been motiveated to start reading more with my recent discovery of the BookTube world. And even though, I don’t post much, I really enjoy this group. I’m not going to set any specific goals or put any pressure to do all of the different CATS/KITS. I’m just going to try to have fun reading again. I am legally blind and can no longer read print books, so 99% of my reading is done via audiobooks. Besides reading, I also enjoy playing Dungeons & Dragons, listening to podcasts/watching YouTube, and my latest obsession is building Lego. And can’t forget the kitties, I have three beautiful girls now, Snowbell, Pepper & Cinnamon.

I will be having individual posts for my categories, but I also like to keep a running list of my reads for the year in this first post.

First two books down for the year.

1. The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan, fantasy 3.5*

This is book 2 in the Wheel of Time series. I've decided to do a reread of the series because of the new Amazon show since it's been close to 20 years since I've read the earlier books in the series and I don't remember a lot of the details. still an enjoyable read on the second go around. This book fits for this month's AlphaKIT for both letters, R & H.

2. Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie, mystery 3.5*

This was another entertaining installment in the Hercule Poirot series. In this one, Poirot recieves a letter from a woman requesting his assistance with a matter, two months after it was dated. He becomes even more intrigued by the case when he learns had died. This was a quick, excellently narrated listen that I finished in one night. This book fits for this month's MysteryKIT, series theme.

I am currently working on another mystery, Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny.

Finished several more books:

3. Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny, mystery 4*

Book 14 of the Chief Inspector Gamache series. Gamache is invited to a crumbling farmhouse where he discovers he has been named an executor to a will of a woman he never met. He is intrigued and begins an investigation into the woman. Of course we end up with a murder along the way. There’s also drugs, embezzlement and family secrets that come into play along the way. Even though we’re never there for a good reason, I always enjoy a visit to Three Pines. This installment was not a disappointment. Looking forward to my next visit. Hopefully won’t be too long. This one fits for MysteryKIT, series.

4. O is for Outlaw by Sue Grafton, mystery 3.5*

Book 15 of the Kinsey Millhone series. In this one, Kinsey comes across a box of old memories with a letter that she never received which causes her to try to track down her first ex-husband which leads her on a personal quest to try to discover the truth of what happened in the past. I enjoyed learning some more about Kinsey’s past. This was another good installment in the series. This was another book that fit for the MysteryKIT series month.

5. The Memory Theater by Karin Tidbeck, fantasy 4*

I picked this book up without knowing anything about based on the fact that I had read a short story collection from the author and really enjoyed it. They are a Swedish author and translator and wrote this book in English. The novel ended up being connected to one of the short stories, Augusta Prime. The Garden is a place where time stands still. The adults who live there live a decadent life with young children to serve their needs. Thistle and Dora and two of the children who find a way out. But must find the answer that will truly set them free. I really enjoyed this. It had such an eerie fairytale-like feel to it which was helped along by the excellent narration from the reader, Tanya Cubric. And I never would have guessed the author was not writing in their native language. I will definitely be looking for more of their works.

6. Unsinkable by Debbie Reynolds, memoir 4*

This was a fun look into Debbie’s life. Although things weren’t always easy for her, she always managed to pull through. She starts off at the time of her third marriage in the 1980s, which was a bit of a surprising place to start at first I thought. I especially enjoyed hearing about her Hollywood memorabilia collection and all of the efforts she went through to try to have a museum to preserve it all. She ended with talking a little about each of her roles over the years. I am a big fan of the classic musicals, singing in the Rain being one of my favorites. It was fun to hear Debbie’s firsthand accounts of everything. It was also great that she narrated the audio. I picked this one up for the CATWoman, biographies & memoirs.

7. The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, horror 4*

Four Blackfoot teenagers make a terrible mistake one night. This has a haunted them all for ten years. Someone is out for vengeance. This book had a bit of a slow start, but once things started to pick up, they really kept moving and I did not want to put the book down. Jones expertly weaves the modern Native American experiences into this haunting, sometimes gruesome, tale of revenge. I also think the narrator, Shaun Taylor-Corbet, did an excellent job with the audio. This was my first book by this author and I will definitely be picking up more of his work. I picked this one up for the AuthorCAT, indigenous authors.

8. Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, fantasy 4*

Book 1 in the Book of the Ancients. Nona is a young girl with secrets who is sold by her mother and eventually finds herself being trained as an assassin nun. The book mostly follows Nona in her early training at the Abbey. It’s a really interesting world that Lawrence has created. It’s a dark gritty world with some interesting, subtle magic. I really liked the character of Nona as she struggles to make her way in this new home. I look forward to seeing where the rest of the series goes from here. This one fits for AlphaKIT, R.

One more book finished:

9. St. Peter's Fair by Ellis Peters narrated by Johanna Ward, 3.5*

Book 4 in The Brother Cadfael Chronicles. It's the summer of 1139 and everyone is excited about the fair. Then murder happens and Cadfael is on the case. I really enjoy this series, especially like the time period and characters. I did have a pretty good idea of the culprit pretty early on, which is unusual for me. But it was still entertaining seeing Cadfael get to the conclusion. This was my first book in my off the shelf category. I had purchased a copy of htis back in 2015 and was able to find an audio edition through my library's Hoopla collection to listen to.

I might be able to squeeze in one more book to finish out the month. Not sure what that will be though.

Feb. 26, 2022, 4:30 pm

A little behind on my posts. Have my last two January reads and all of February. Here they are:

10. Broken Homes by Ben Aaronovitch, 4*
Book 4 in the Rivers of London series featuring Peter Grant, part of the special London unit that deals with the supernatural. I’m really enjoying this series and feel that it gets a little better with each book.

11. The Cleft by Doris Lessing, 3*
This was an odd story for me. It’s a female-centered creation myth which is being recounted by an Ancient Roman senator. I’m not really sure why I picked this book up. I guess the blurb sounded like it would be interesting. But it didn’t really work for me. But at least it’s one I’m able to cross off the list of physical books owned.

12. Once More Upon a Time by Roshani Chokshi 3*
This is a bit of an expansions to the fairy tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses. This is about one of the sisters and a prince who are cursed to a year and a day of happiness together. This was a quick, cute novella. However, it almost lost me at the end when one of my least favorite things in writing happened, the stubborn, usually young female, main character, jumps to conclusions without knowing all of the facts and can easily figure out that they are mistaken by looking at the thing or asking a simple question I probably would have quit the book, but there was only 5 minutes left on the audio.

13. Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, 4*
Dana is a young black woman living in 1970s California, who starts getting pulled into antebellum Maryland where she seems to have some connection to a young boy, Rufus, the son of a plantation owner. I really enjoyed this and am so glad to have finally picked it up. This was another one that’s been sitting on my shelves for quite a while now.

14. Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire, 4*
This is book 7 in the Wayward Children series, a portal fantasy about a school for kids who have found their way into other magical worlds, but then end up back home and struggle to fit in again. In this one, we visit with Cora who decides she wants to leave Miss Eleanor’s school and transfers to Whitethorn Institute. I thoroughly enjoy this series. And this as another great installment. It was interesting to see how things were run at this other school. Looking forward to see who we get to visit with next.

15. In the Woods by Tana French, 3*
Book 1 in the Dublin Murder Squad. One summer day, three kids are playing in the woods, but only one returns. The other two are never found. 20 years later, the survivor is now a detective and gets involved in a case of a missing girl in those same woods. I finally picked this one up for the MysteryKIT of cold cases. I have to admit; I was slightly disappointed in this. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this book for so long. I found it to be a bit slow moving and not exactly what I was expecting. I’m glad that I finally read it, since it’s another book off my shelf. I think I will give the next book a try before deciding to give up on the series.

16. The Unkindest Tide by Seanan McGuire, 4*
Book 13 in the October Daye series. The sea witch needs Toby to help her call in the debts of the Selkies. This was exactly what I needed when I started this. I always enjoying seeing what Toby and her gang gets up to. I also read a short story, Rat-Catcher which was about Tybalt and his rise to King of the Cats.

17. On Beauty by Zadie Smith, 3*
This takes place over about a year in the lives of the Belsey family, a mixed family living in Boston and entrenched in the world of Wellington College. Their paths intersect with the Kipps family throughout the book. The fathers are academic rivals and complete opposites. I felt like I almost decided not to finish this. I was not really feeling like I was connecting with the story. It felt a little disjointed to me, jumping from one moment in one of the family member’s life to a different moment of a different family member. I generally don’t enjoy contemporary fiction, but wanted to give this one a try since it was on the 1001 Books list and I’ve had it sitting on my shelf for a while. This also helped fill a Bingo square, book published the year I joined LT, 2005.

I am working on two more books that I hope to finish this month:
The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch, have about 3.5 hours left on the audio. I picked this one up for the 1001 Books to Read book club that I am in.
Amatka by Karin Tidbeck; haven’t started this one yet, but I wanted to give it a go because it’s short and will fit for WomenCAT, in

Apr. 10, 2022, 5:35 pm

As I had feared, I’ve fallen behind in my posts, which usually starts to happen with me around this time of year. Fortunately, though, my reading has not been neglected as well, which is something that also has been happening the past few years. I’ve finished 18 books since my last post. I will list them all and give a summary of my thoughts.

I did also try a little TBR game in early March. I’ve been focusing a lot on trying to find digital copies of the physical books I can’t read, and have been happy with my progress in this, with 6 books read in this category for the first quarter of the year. I’ve realized that I also have a large library of unread Kindle books that I’ve been neglecting, so wanted to start working on some of these.

I made 3 lists of 20 Kindle books. List 1 were some of the oldest novels, list 2 were newest novels and list 3 was short story collections. I then rolled a d20 to pick one of the books from each list. I didn’t set a time limit on when I had to read them, but just wanted to give myself something to focus on.

So for my list of older books, I rolled a 15 which was Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees. I had purchased this for $0.99 back in 2013. I was excited to get to this one. The only thing I knew was that it was a fairy tale type of fantasy story. For some reason I thought it was written in the 80s, but I was way off with that. Original publication was 1926. Unfortunately, this was a DNF. I just couldn’t get into it. I can’t really pinpoint why I wasn’t liking it, just not for me right now, I guess. I’m a bit disappointed about this since I did have high hopes.

For the newer books, I rolled a 9, Toward the Midnight Sun by Eoin Dempsey. This was a free Prime early release that I picked up on 12/1/19. This sounded like it would be interesting. A young woman travels to Alaska during the Klondike gold rush to marry a man she doesn’t know to help save her family from financial ruin. But unfortunate, this was another DNF. I did not care for the writing and not that I know much about this period in history, but I found some of the things that were happening a bit unbelievable.

My short stories worked out much better. I decided to pick two for this so I could switch back & forth in case I wanted some variety, but it didn't work out that way. First I rolled a 1, The Best American Noir of the Century which I had already started back in 2018, but had only finished 7 out of the 39 stories. I decided to save this one for April’s MysteryKIT, noir theme, and have just started it today. My second one was a 6 for Miss Marple: The Complete Short Stories by Agatha Christie. This started and finished right away. It was such a delight to visit with Miss Marple again, it had been awhile for me. This one also checks off one of my physical books, as I own two copies of The Tuesday Club Murders, which were included in this collection.

So now I will add some new books to the lists and roll again. Hopefully I will have better luck with the novels this time around.

Older books, I rolled an 11 which is The Gingerbread House by Carin Gerhardsen. This s book 1 in a Swedish mystery series. I’m always up for a good mystery, so hopefully this will be enjoyable.

Newer books got a 10, That Wild Country: An Epic Journey Through the Past, Present, and Future of America’s Public Lands by Mark Kenyon. This sounds interesting, plus it is available through Kindle Unlimited with Audible, so I can listen to the audio version, which is much easier for me.

For collections, I’m just going to pick one this time, since I’m still working on one from the last round. I got 17 which is The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2017. I’m always up for some good sci fi & fantasy stories. Glad I didn't get another mystery collection this time. I haven't read any out of this collection yet. Hope there will be some good ones.

I have been focusing a lot on continuing series that I hope to get caught up on. I've got so many that I've been working on, though, it's a daunting task. But I am happy with my progress. .

I had one DNF, The Gingerbread House by Carin Gerhardsen. This was one of my dice roll picks and I just could not get into it. This is the first in a German mystery series and I was not enjoying the writing.

I am currently working on:
The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin

>34 MissWatson: Thanks for stopping by! I've falen off in my posting this year, but have been keeping my list up to date. This has been one of my best reading years in a long time, numbers wise and quality wise, more 5* reads this year, than any previous years. Starting my planning for next year where I am hoping to be more consistantly active in the group.
