Found: Fiction Something like "Journey To Paradise"

I read this book years ago at the public library and can't figure out the name or who wrote it, it isn't at the library anymore to my knowledge. It is called something like "Journey to Paradise" or "Journey to Providence". It is a book where the main character goes on an Odyssey, it uses the word providence a couple times, and it happens in a period similar to the 1800s. The only scene I really remember is one where the main character (a girl) perfects the art of singing by singing into a candle until the flame doesn't flicker. They also stay in a nunnery (or something similar) when they reach where they are going I believe. If you can help me figure out what book it is I'd be so grateful because I've been trying for at least five years.

Crossing to Paradise by Kevin Crossley-Holland? It's set much earlier than the 1800s but some of the other details fit.
