All I can remember is that there are two twins (girls) who are in some sort of academy for flying spaceships. They have these pets, which are sort of familiars. One of them is a cat.
In the book they use shapes to cast spells, like shield spells around the spaceship so it doesn't tear apart during hyperspace travel. I think maybe one of them isn't originally accepted to the flight academy, but eventually they get a ship.
They control the ship with a new technology in which one of them goes into a sort of cryo-sleep tank, and casts spells to control the ship.
At one point, they discover that the pet cat is really a fairy, and once they unlock something or other, they can communicate with it (I think the one person finds a random spell somewhere and decides to cast it and give the spell all her energy, which would normally kill you).
The fairy reveals the location of a city full of these fairies, and in order for people without a familiar to enter, they have to link themselves with each other by using the other person as a spellcast before they can see the fairy people.
Last thing I remember is that they find a dreadnought in the ocean near the fairy people, and inside it they find a park (like a place with trees and stuff)
