I started a historical fiction, classic, in-translation murder mystery re-read of The Name of the Rose last Sunday morning whilst waiting for the handyman to come by and finish up. He did eventually come by (seems the company didn't confirm he *should* come on Sunday, just asked him if he could), did a great job, and still has more to do.
But what a great book to start a day with! Sooo much information in this book about the monasteries and abbots and political machinations!! Also, great mystery. And labyrinth. And books!!

>4 threadnsong: one of my favorite movies but the book seems to intimidate me...lol. I've had it on my shelf for years and keep meaning to get to it but just haven't gotten there yet.

>6 bhabeck: Movies are often better than the books. I'm sure the industry makes more on movies than they do on books, so they don't want the patrons to fall asleep from boredom, so they spice the movies up more. Can't very well change a 100-year-old book:)

>6 bhabeck:, >7 Carol420: It was an interesting re-read. There were parts that (TBH) put me to sleep because they were so dense, but they still contained gobs of information about the infighting between the different monastic houses: Benedictines, Cluniacs, Franciscans. The central argument seems to be whether Jesus and his followers owned things, or owned things in common, or swore to poverty entirely. Seems the Inquisition put people to death for living one way as a Franciscan one year, and a few years later they were burned at the stake. But it was fascinating to read the depth of history discussed in this book.
Oh, and the ending of the movie is soooo much better than the book. I won't give it away (because I still hope you read it >6 bhabeck:!) but it provides more . . . hope.

In ref to Carol's review of'The queen and I' by Sue Townsend
I found myself thinking of this book during the long celebrations of Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee- 4 days of it. Media overdrive here, enough to drive the most dedicated monarchist mad. Having said that I respect the Queen enormously- and- she has a terrific sense of humour. The highlight of the celebrity laden concert on Day 3 was a recording of Her Majesty taking tea with Paddington Bear- blissful! you may(or may not) have seen the Olympics coverage of the 2012 opening ceremony in London in which she jetted in with James Bond himself.
