My heart goes out to Ukraine.

For those of you who don't know me, I have been on LT and a 75er since December 2008. I have a great Hubby (who found LT for me) and 3 grown children. I like almost any book there is, but I tend more toward fiction. I currently work with my Hubby in our business which cleans industrial and storm water and brings it up to EPA standards. Particle removal, pH balancing, heavy metal decontamination, etc. He's a ChemE and I was a Neuroscience major, so I understand the science of our projects and can translate them into English for our customers (LOL); I also do the accounting and marketing -- you just don't want me to design the equipment! I have been a neuroscience lab researcher, an editor and writer, an advertising exec, and the Community Relations Mgr of the NBA MN Timberwolves as well as their 501C3 Director. Career path? NO! Eclectic and fun? YES! I am currently on a board for Literary Arts here in Portland, Oregon, and I also practice TKD (3rd degree BB).

2022 Books Off The Shelf

So, here is my idea for reading more of the books I already own...wish me luck!

Using dice...

First roll -- even for upstairs or odd for downstairs
Second roll* -- which pile/bookshelf
Third roll* -- count this many books in

* Random 1 or 2 dice because I have more than 6, but don't want to leave out "1"

e.g. Downstairs, Second Shelf, 3rd book

3/12 -- I've read 15 BOTS so far!
5/1 -- 17 so far.

Books Freed = 60!!! as of 2/6/22. After being closed for two years, Powell's is open again for used books drop-offs! I used the online version instead of braving the long lines at the stores; they only wanted 7 of my books, but I made $15 bucks to spend on more books and they paid for shipping! LOL. I only found 3 duplicates and the rest are books I've read but don't feel the need to keep. And they were picked over by local friends and family first before donating to Goodwill. ; )

And another 32 as of 2/22/22!! And that cool date happened to fall on a Tuesday -- very appropriate. (Say the day out loud, you'll get it. LOL) Most of these were travel guides and who needs those anymore with everything online? Plus the info was getting pretty dated. Hours, prices, etc. So bye bye.

Please join us if you are interested in Reusing and Recycling. People are sharing brand and book suggestions and also keeping track of their efforts. Check it out!

https://www.librarything.com/topic/339326

Below is my personal list of what I am doing and want to be doing. I plan to keep updating this as I make improvements in my lifestyle this year. Brands listed are my choices and more suggestions are listed in the above thread.

Things I was already doing
*Carry reusable shopping bags
*Reuse packaging and don't overwrap (I have a whole closet of boxes and packing material I recycle)
*Use recyclable paper and cardboard instead of styrofoam packing material
*Buy my veggies in cardboard crates instead of plastic containers whenever possible
*Use a home soda maker with reusable bottle
*Dishwasher detergent -- Planet
*Silicone and beeswax dish toppers/wraps
*Garbage Bags -- Seventh Generation
*Compost Collector under sink that goes into city Compost Bin
*Cloth Napkins
*Wider comfort range for heating and cooling house
*Motion detectors on lights to keep them off when not in use

Recently started
*Keeping a reusable water bottle and cup in the car
*And a reusable utensil kit in my glove compartment
*And a reusable metal straw
*Phone Case -- Switched to compostable case by Pela
*Toilet Paper -- Who Gives A Crap
*Laundry Detergent sheets -- TruEarth
*Cloth "Paper" Towels -- Marley's Monsters
*Recycled Paper Towels -- Who Gives A Crap
*Sponges compostable -- If You Care
*Scrub Cloths cotton and cellulose -- Down to Earth Basics

Next steps
*Transitioning from liquid soap, shower gels and shampoo to solid versions not packaged in plastic. This one may be a bit harder for me with my skin allergies, but I am going to try. I am using up what I have left and then I will try to make the switch.
*Toothpaste
*Composter -- outside
*Ridwell for recycling things

Regarding the comment on your last thread about abortion, it's my understanding that a pregnancy carrying a 7-9 month fetus ends by definition in delivery, even by caesarian. So the supposed horror of aborting a baby at term is to scare the masses.

I once told an ardent anti-abortion person (male) that I didn't understand freedom if it didn't include what I could control within the circumference of my own skin. He had no answer.

Sigh. Much more fun to talk about books.

I am halfway through The Music of Bees and loving it! (And the Oregon connection doesn't hurt either, LOL)

Three lonely strangers in a rural Oregon town, each working through grief and life's curveballs, are brought together by happenstance on a local honeybee farm where they find surprising friendship, healing--and maybe even a second chance--just when they least expect it.

Forty-four-year-old Alice Holtzman is stuck in a dead-end job, bereft of family, and now reeling from the unexpected death of her husband. Alice has begun having panic attacks whenever she thinks about how her life hasn't turned out the way she dreamed. Even the beloved honeybees she raises in her spare time aren't helping her feel better these days.

In the grip of a panic attack, she nearly collides with Jake--a troubled, paraplegic teenager with the tallest mohawk in Hood River County--while carrying 120,000 honeybees in the back of her pickup truck. Charmed by Jake's sincere interest in her bees and seeking to rescue him from his toxic home life, Alice surprises herself by inviting Jake to her farm.

And then there's Harry, a twenty-four-year-old with debilitating social anxiety who is desperate for work. When he applies to Alice's ad for part-time farm help, he's shocked to find himself hired. As an unexpected friendship blossoms among Alice, Jake, and Harry, a nefarious pesticide company moves to town, threatening the local honeybee population and illuminating deep-seated corruption in the community. The unlikely trio must unite for the sake of the bees--and in the process, they just might forge a new future for themselves.

Beautifully moving, warm, and uplifting, The Music of Bees is about the power of friendship, compassion in the face of loss, and finding the courage to start over (at any age) when things don't turn out the way you expect.

"A hopeful, uplifting story about the power of chosen family and newfound home and beginning again . . . but it’s the bees, with all their wonder and intricacy and intrigue, that make this story sing."
--Laurie Frankel, New York Times bestselling author of This Is How It Always Is"

Not to be confused with The Murmur of Bees, the The Music of Bees was awesome! I could not put this one down. It's springtime and my flowers are blooming and I loved learning about bees! Not to mention the three quirky, lovable, main characters. If you support keeping the earth healthy; want to cheer on someone coming to grips with new physical disabilities; hope that a young man can find his inner strength and voice; and want to follow someone not giving up her memories and love but letting go of grief, then this is the book for you! It's fun, touching and uplifting. Highly recommended. 5.0

I love Jodi Taylor!! For fans of the Time Police or The Chronicles of St Mary's, The Elizabeth Cage series was just as much fun, with more twists and turns than I expected. I listened to them all on audio -- awesome!

A gripping supernatural thriller series from international bestselling author, Jodi Taylor. 'I don't know who I am. I don't know what I am.' Elizabeth Cage is a child when she discovers that there are things in this world that only she can see. But she doesn't want to see them and she definitely doesn't want them to see her. What is a curse to Elizabeth is a gift to others - a very valuable gift they want to control. When her husband dies, Elizabeth's world descends into a nightmare. But as she tries to piece her life back together, she discovers that not everything is as it seems. Alone in a strange and frightening world, she's a vulnerable target to forces beyond her control. And she knows that she can't trust anyone... White Silence is a twisty supernatural thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.

No God Like the Mother by Kesha Ajose Fisher 4.0, Winner of the Oregon Book Award

"Set around the world--the bustling streets of Lagos, the arid gardens beside the Red Sea, an apartment in Paris, the rain-washed suburbs of the Pacific Northwest--this collection of nine stories is a masterful exploration of life's uncertainty that will draw readers in and keep them riveted."

I had the pleasure of taking a Literary Arts Class led by Kesha and we talked her into doing one more session so we could talk about her first book, No God Like A Mother. Interesting to see how the title connects with the stories. Tough, moving glimpses into the lives and power of women. She was born in Chicago and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, and now she lives here in Oregon, with her family!

Just starting Stolen Thoughts by Tim Tigner -- off to a great start!

How would your life change …
if you could read another’s thoughts?
If you were the one …
to break the biological code?

Imagine John Grisham meets Michael Crichton in a fast-paced mystery thriller.
_______________________________________

There’s been a breakthrough on the campus of Caltech. A discovery. An invention. One so startling and surprisingly sinister that the inventor can’t tell a soul.

Destined to delight everyone in your book club, Stolen Thoughts is a clever thriller you will quickly finish and never forget.

Precariously poised at the center of the action is Victoria Pixler, a bioengineering student with a tragic past, a passionate quest, and a brilliant mind. After a decade of dedication, Vicky finally struck gold only to have her dream shattered and her career terminated—by the least likely suspect.

Propelling the thrills from the middle of the mystery is one of humanity’s great questions: Would the power to read minds be a blessing, or a curse?

The weather TOTALLY did not cooperate, so no camping this weekend. Instead, I have gone for a walk already this morning which enabled me to feel not guilty about eating the chocolate chip cookies I just made with my nephew. ; )

Just finished in Five Years by Rebecca Serle for my RL bookclub next week. A fun read about a young female lawyer who gets a glimpse of her life five years in the future and the reader gets to follow how that one hour may or may not change her life. It's about love and friendship and ambition all rolled into a quick read. Perfect for summer! 3.5

Now I am going to dive into...

Oh, and the French Open. : )

Hi Kim!

>60 Berly: I’m glad your children honored you for Mother’s Day.

>93 Berly: Ugh. Shuggie Bain was never on my radar because it sounded just way too painful to read, as you put it. Richard's 'grimdark' word for well-written books about emotional landmines keep getting further and further off my radar. I'd rather read mysteries, thrillers, and, currently, Georgian and Regency bodice rippers.

>121 Berly: I know exactly how I’d spend millions of dollars. First of all, keep the lottery win a secret if legally possible. If not, immediately get rid of the landline and change our cell phone numbers. Get a high-powered lawyer and accountant in addition to our financial advisor. Pay off all our debt, set aside a trust for Jenna and my sister (making sure her husband can’t touch it in any way, shape, or form), set aside enough to keep us into our very old age, then set up an anonymous, charitable trust to help people in the county I live in. *smile*

>127 Berly: Go to WordleBot. WordleBot. Use the right arrows to go to the Your First Guess page, look at what your first guess cuts the possible solutions to. Hover over ‘possible solutions’, click on it, and there’s the list. I put it into a tab on my Wordle spreadsheet.

So, we packed up my nephew and he moved out last Tuesday. Back to MN and he was excited. I went and got my booster shot on Thursday morning thinking life was about to be calmer and I could afford the down time because I always feel like crap after the shots.

But no. I woke up at 2am with a fever and after I took something for it, I noticed a text from my middle daughter. She and her long-term boyfriend had just broken up. After a phone call, and lots of tears, I went to pick her up and bring her home. Then, the next two days, while battling a fever, I helped move all her stuff out of their shared apartment and back home. Empty nesting is not happening. My garage and living room are full of stuff. She's doing okay. The fever is gone but I'm exhausted.

I'm probably massively insensitive, but it seems like Becky is tolerating breaking up with her boyfriend of (I have no idea how long, we don't talk about boyfriend, no, no, no) a couple weeks back. I did learn more about the fellow as she was venting in the immediate aftermath, but nothing since. I remember now there was a clue - Becky asked about the time a friend's daughter asked me for relationship advice shortly before leaving a long term boyfriend.

Hi Kim! I'm making the rounds, post-vacation. I have no hope of catching up; rather, I'm just zipping to the bottom of threads to say hello and I'll start fresh from here.

Happy Fourth of July!! I will not be watching fireworks in person because I'm pretty sure I have COVID round two. Sigh. Son and girlfriend tested positive and I have symptoms but haven't tested positive...yet...isolating in my bedroom. I see lots of reading and TV in my future! : P

I’ve had it twice now so I feel your pain, Kim. Your daughter’s bridal shower looks like a fun time. I hope the Covid germs weren’t crashing the party! Having it outside would certainly help keep them at bay. Feel better soon!

Hi Kim my dear, i wasn't sure about wishing my dear American friends a Happy Independence Day with what has happened recently, i am happier wishing you all a Happy 4th of July though as i think the vast majority of women have had their independence taken away by MEN. It makes me mad to say that i am a man when so many men make the lives of women so difficult for no other reason than they have power to do this, it is so wrong.

Sorry if i have spouted too much my dear and we send love and hugs to you and your family my dear friend.

Yup. Confirmed case of COVID. My very full house is working against me at this point -- Too many youngsters going everywhere. Hubby is sleeping far away from me upstairs. LOL So far he and my other daughter seem OK. (knock on wood). I am binge-watching Supernatural. Symptoms are annoying but not scary at this point.

>139 karenmarie: >149 Berly: I too am on the same page re: becoming suddenly rich. Keeping it under our caps would be the first priority; I'd get all the advice, and pay off all the debt. We'd stay at our home, but re-do it and eventually we'd give each of our siblings a one time, large amount (without them knowing what our winnings were) and each of our friends would get a small amount too. It's so much fun spending money you don't have!

>247 Berly: Argh! COVID. Not good. I tested again today as am unwell (again) but thought it was a long shot to have COVID within again within 2 months! (I am neg.)
I hope you continue with the light symptoms!

Oh my. So sorry you're hit again.

I was in your territory of reaction on Thursday. Something at a French restaurant set me off, and I was as allergy-sick as I've ever been. It doesn't happen to me that often, thank goodness, but now I'm not sure what I was reacting to. Scary.

Richard's advice sounds good. Drop us a line when you feel better.

Had a monoclonal antivirus injection on Thursday. Felt better on Saturday and then good Sunday. But yesterday I wound up in ER with asthma flare. Not sure if COVID related or not and I felt bad having to go in to ER while still positive (home tested Saturday). I had to hold up my hand and wave at least 3 attendees back out of them room and tell them I was positive so they could add another layer of protection. (Why did they not know?) After 5 hours made it back home by midnight. Wiped today but able to breathe. Remaining quarantined. Ugh.

I have been reading a lot of trashy books because I have no concentration, but two worth a mention are the next in my Chronicles of St. Mary series by Jodi Taylor, What Could Possible Go Wrong? and The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person by Frederik Joseph. Recommend them both. : )
