Pinocchio, The Story of a Puppet by Carlo Collodi 2011

The story of Pinocchio is one of the world’s best known fairy tales. Written by Collodi between 1881 and 1883, the story of the mischievous puppet who became a boy first appeared serialised in an Italian children’s magazine. It was an instant hit, and from there spread around the globe.

The Folio Society edition of xvii + 197 pages is just gorgeous with 18 colour illustrations by Grahame Baker-Smith, some of which are integrated, and one a double page spread. The edition is translated by Mary Alice Murray and there is a nine page introduction by David Almond. It is set in a larger than normal font size to make reading by children easy.

The book is three-quarter bound in dark blue buckram with a colour picture printed Modigliani paper cover. The endpapers are printed in a wood pattern, and the dark blue 26x20cm. slipcase is printed with a wrap-around colour picture that is the same on both sides.

This is one of the finest FS editions and the illustrations are sensational. It is, or should be, a “must have” for FS collectors.

I was fortunate enough to lay my hands on a copy in 2019, shortly before prices for this went through the roof.

>1 wcarter: Magnifique!

For those of us still waiting, a film by Disney this September, 2022 and an animated production by Netflix in December also this year should provide solace.

>4 mr.philistine: there is also an Italian version available on Amazon that just recently came out in last year or two which was very good starring Roberto benini

Collectors note:

As >3 LondonLawyer: has indicated, this book has become a cult item and the typical asking price is now in the $300-$400 range. May I suggest the following alternative:

The most beautiful edition of Pinocchio, one that I own, is the edition from Macmillan and Co. published in 1929. It is a large quarto size and it was printed in Italy by Bemporad and Figlio. The playful illustrations by Attilio Mussino have never been equalled. Every page has an illustration of one sort or another. The binding is a navy blue cloth with an image of Pinocchio printed in red, green, blue and black on the front cover. It has a very wide range of offering prices but a collectible copy can be obtained in the same price range as the FS edition, i.e., $300 to $450. In this price range, THIS is the edition of Pinocchio you want resting on your bookshelves. Link below.
