Just bought a Kindle!

With some of the books I want to read being available only in e-format, I finally took the plunge and bought one. It’s very basic. It was on sale for $84. It’s a 6” paper white.

I hate reading on the iPad due to the glare. I had a Sony e-reader years ago. I liked reading on it. It got too old and Sony was no longer supporting it. I think I’ll enjoy the Kindle, especially for traveling. :)

Yay for new stuff! I am using the Kindle app and was just deciding what to read next.

Enjoy! A Kindle is like the Tardis of libraries. Bigger on the inside, and no one will know how big your TBR pile is.

Enjoy! My kindle is an old Touch that I inherited from a friend when she upgraded. I wouldn't be without it now (although I also wouldn't be without my shelves and stacks of print books!)

I like my nook. (2000+), but I have a kindle (~200-300) for those books not available anywhere else and a Kobo with ~100 books. I also back all books up on my laptop & external drive.

I'm happy with my book life.

Yes, I still have paperbooks, but it's cheaper to go electronic for new books.

Oh! Congratulations!!!
I love my Paperwhite. I had to read something on my Kindle Fire last year (it was an ePub from Hoopla) and I managed but it wasn't an experience I'm in any hurry to duplicate. My suggestion is to borrow as often as you can, because the ones you buy pile up somewhat out of sight, and it's easy to forget that you bought them. That's one of the many reasons that LT is so handy!

Congratulations on your new Kindle.

I love my Kindle. I had an old one that would no longer connect to the web so I could not load any more books on it so I needed to buy a new one. I decided to buy a Paperwhite. I couldn’t afford it until my next pay day however. Then I was looking at the rewards page at my Telco and discovered I had enough rewards points to get a free Paperwhite so I ordered it immediately and it arrived 4 days later.

>7 clamairy: I don’t like to read on the iPad. I have the Kindle app, but the glare, Ugh. And my eyes start to sting after a while.

>6 skittles: I will always love paper books best, but I know the Kindle will come in handy, especially when I travel!

When I first got one I wasn't sure how much I would use it.... a few years later my Unread library is about a hundred books. Someone in this group suggested signing up with Early Bird and Bookbub, so I did both - you fill out a profile of genres and authors that you like and you get a daily email with ebooks that are on sale. It makes it entirely too easy to just click and buy, but it is very fun.

I have carpal tunnel damage in both arms, so the Kindle has turned out to be a lifesaver - no more struggling to hang onto giant hardbound tomes!

I hope you come to love yours in time too :)

>12 catzteach: Just remember to add them to your library when you buy them, and either tag them Kindle or create a new collection. I've gotten pretty decent at doing that immediately from my phone. Then when I am looking for something new to read I can come in here, and just look at the books in that collection. I have polished off quite a few that way this year!

It is easy to end up with loads of books on your kindle. Be sure to get a matching bookcase for your kindle. You will need it for all the books it holds.

>13 clamairy: I will try to get into the habit of logging a book as soon as I buy it.

The Kindle is supposed to show up tomorrow. I know exactly which book I want to buy first.

>15 haydninvienna: It is a system not understood by many people. I have known librarians to go weak on first witnessing this level of orderly chaos. They have said, "But dinosaurs and binders do not come under jigsaws. That is just wrong."

I tolerate they innocence.

Enjoy your Kindle! I got an old Touch for Christmas back in 2012. It was kind of a novelty for a while. 10 years later I read almost exclusively on my Kindle. I bought my first Paperwhite secondhand when my Touch ran out of storage space, and for Christmas last year I got the new Paperwhite with more storage than the first two combined. I love it, though I'm not a fan of how Amazon keeps messing with the UI...

It came! I bought my first book (and entered it into LT already). I bought The Day That Never Comes. I already have my eye on a few others. I think I’ve created a monster. :)

Oh, do you guys keep yours on all the time, or do you turn it off when you aren’t reading it?

>19 catzteach: Very exciting! Have you read other books in the Dublin trilogy? I can't remember.

I just close my cover and it goes to sleep. The charge lasts quite a few days doing this, so I rarely turn it off with the button.

>19 catzteach: What >20 MrsLee: said. The battery lasts a lot longer if you turn off wi-fi. It's nice to keep it on if you sync your reading with other devices, (I also use the kindle app on my phone), but I find it pretty simple to just 'go to' the location on each device instead of relying on wi-fi. My 9-year old first gen Paperwhite still holds a charge for weeks.

Pro tip for library lends: you can keep an e-loan past the auto-return date if wi-fi is off since the file won't get auto-deleted from your kindle until the next time you connect to the cloud. I often use this 'feature' when there are long wait times for a library book. I borrow, download to kindle, turn off wi-fi, and immediately return the book so the next person and I can read it simultaneously.

>20 MrsLee: I have not yet purchased a cover. I guess I should. I’ll look for one tonight.

>21 ScoLgo: I knew the trick with library loans. One has to be careful that the devices aren’t synced, otherwise the trick does not work. My friend found that out the hard way. :) I think I’d like to keep the Kindle synced with my phone because I have the app and would like to be able to read a book when I don’t have my Kindle with me.

>22 catzteach: The 'reading on your phone' trick has saved my bacon more times than I care to count. Stopping to pick up meds for a family member and having to wait 45 minutes can become a pleasant reading break. LOL

I leave my WiFi on because I am constantly looking up words or phrases* or searching for other books that are mentioned. Even with WiFi on the power lasts several weeks, and my Paperwhite is about 5 years old. Like MrsLee, when I close the cover the Kindle goes to sleep. Though I often leave it open and touch the snooze button on the bottom so I can see the book's cover!

*I finally figured out how to install a working Latin dictionary. I read a fair amount books with Latin phrases and it really annoyed me that there was no translation available.

>19 catzteach: I leave mine on. It goes to sleep mode automatically when closing the cover. I do put mine in Airplane Mode to save on battery life.

Like most people above I leave my kindle on and rely on the cover putting it to sleep. I keep the wifi on, but then I do not use library loans for books I want to read, so do not have to prolong a loan period.

I never thought of how important it was to have a cover to control the book sleeping and preserve battery charge. I just bought a cover with the Kindle thinking it would be more practical for holding and transporting. The way I use the Kindle the battery charge lasts for weeks. The wifi does not seem to put much pressure on the battery life.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. I bought a cover last night. It should be here in a few days. That will protect it when I have to put it in my bag and take it somewhere, too, so it’s a good thing to have.

Clam, I have been known to pull out my phone and read in the grocery line. Why just sit and do nothing when I can read?
