What are we watching?

After seeing mentions of movies and shows we're watching on various threads, I thought it would be nice to have a place to gather these recommendations. So, what are you watching that the rest of us shouldn't miss?!

Last fall I had to buy a new laptop to replace one with broken hardware. The new laptop came with 6 months of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. I'm trying to catch up on Disney movies I've missed before my 6 months expires. I like the classic movies I remember from my childhood. Last night I watched Candleshoe with Jodie Foster, Helen Hayes, and David Niven. I don't know how I missed it in my childhood. I loved the setting and the actors, and a hidden treasure plot is always fun.

Thanks for starting a thread, Carrie. Recently, we have watched both of the Knives Out movies. We loved the new one, so we did a re-watch of the first one to see which was our favorite. Mine was the first one, but they are both so much fun.

We also did a double feature of old movies - All About Eve and Dial M for Murder

In tv series, we have been watching The Brokenwood Mysteries, Agatha Raisin, and Madame Blanc

>3 Crazymamie: I love all three of those Acorn series! Even though The Brokenwood Mysteries is probably my favorite of the three, I still have quite a few left to watch since the episodes are longer.

I love Dial M for Murder as well. I have to confess that I've never seen All About Eve. Knives Out is on my radar!

I must admit to learning about TV mainly from the girls. I know that they have been bingeing on the Addams family spin-off recently and the update of the 70's show (apparently the 'new' kids grate on them).

I do love my movies though and visits to the cinema used to be Hani and my weekly treat. COVID has put paid to that habit, I'm afraid. The last movie I saw at the cinema was the adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing which I did like.

Over Christmas I actually sat and watched a film each day - I almost never sit and watch a film. I've decided to try and watch one film a week. Mamie started me off with a list (quite a long one). I may be going a bit off list, depending on what I can find to watch. >:-)

Helen's Film club this week was Suspicion, staring Cary Grant & Joan Fontaine, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. She's a shy single daughter of a general, destined to be a spinster and look after her parents. He's a society gent, a man about town. She knows nothing of him and it shows, she gets swept off her feet far too easily and without the parental inspection that might have uncovered more of the information that comes to light later. When we meet her, she's reading a book in Child Psychology, but she seems to not use those braincells when it comes to her husband and her marriage. That he is a gambler and liar is not immediately apparent, but soon becomes so once they marry. Cary Grant does a fine line in menace and makes a convincing villain, Joan Fontaine does helpless female well - the character would do well to use the brains that the opening sets up.
The ending feels like a false note, I can't say I believed it.

I'm kinda liking the variety that these tv anthologies have to offer

I have wanted to see Narcos for a long time and I am finally getting to it. I am nearly done with the 1st season and it is excellent, but beware- it is extremely violent. I am also enjoying Last of Us, 2 eps in. HBOMax. I also recently watched Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. Very dark but I liked it. The stop-motion is incredibly beautiful. Also on Netflix.

>5 PaulCranswick: >9 EllaTim: We too stopped going to the cinema once COVID hit. The last movie I saw at the cinema before the lockdown, oddly enough, was Knives Out. I would love to see Glass Onion, but we don't have Netflix. Maybe we'll be able to go back to the theater in person before long.

I hope to get caught up on the various streaming Star Trek series. I've seen both seasons of Picard--I especially enjoyed the first season--and I understand season 3 will be out soon.

This past Christmas I was gifted a bunch of Doctor Who that brought my collection up through Peter Capaldi, and I will be getting the Jodie Whittaker collection in May, so I decided it was time for a re-watch. This will probably be on ongoing project over the next few months as I slowly work my way through it.

I'm on series 3 now (David Tennant and Freema Agyeman). The last episode I watched was when they go back to 1599 and it was delightful.

I have wanted to see this film since I first heard about it, early last year. It was finally released in late December and is finally getting a wider release. I read the novel, Women Talking in preparation of seeing this. It is a good book but I have to say I liked the film even more. The writing is excellent and the amazing cast of women are incredible, especially Claire Foy and Rooney Mara. You may have to wait until the film streams somewhere but I highly recommend that you see it.

I watched the first couple of episodes of The Mysterious Benedict Society and fell asleep in the middle of the third episode. (Not because it was boring. I was just really tired!) The child actors seem to be well cast, and I enjoyed the creative thinking that's a big part of the plotline.

Most recently watched the season finale of "Miss Scarlett and the Duke" (as opposed to the Superbowl), which was very enjoyable. I'm really hoping they'll do a season 4. Last night we watched the movie "Uncharted" which wasn't entirely fantastic but was okay. Not as good as "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" (watched Saturday night) which I thought was pretty amusing. I do like it when the popular people poke fun at themselves.

>16 msf59: This is in my Netflix queue. It's due to drop on March 7.

As to what I'm watching, I'm currently re-watching the first 5 or 6 seasons of Grey's Anatomy -- up to wherever it was that T.R. Knight and Katherine Hegl left the cast. After that, I pretty well lost interest in the original, so probably won't watch the remaining ... fourteen (!!!!) seasons.

I did finish the 1st season of "Trapped" and it was excellent. I will definitely watch S2. I am currently enjoying "Single Drunk Female", (good cast but the lead is awesome). I started "Narcos" S2. Such a good show but the violence may not be for everyone. The actor playing Escobar is fantastic. I am also watching "Last of Us", which I really like it. Never played the game. Ep 6 dropped on Sunday.

I have The Joy Luck Club out from the library too, and am hoping to watch it soon.

"Perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Fortitude is one of the safest towns on earth. There has never been a violent crime here. Until now."

^"Fortitude" was recently recommended to me and I watched the first 2 eps. I like it but it is not as strong as "Trapped", at least in the early going. It is more slick and polished. The scenery is stunning and they managed to snag a strong international cast.

I also just finished Narcos season 2. I absolutely love this show but the violence may not be for every taste. I am also enjoying "Irma Vep" (HBO) and nearing the end of "Single Drunk Female" (Hulu) which has been terrific.

I'm going through such a slump that I dragged out my DVD set of the old Joseph Campbell PBS series "The Power of Myth" and am re-watching that.

Tried to get into "The Crown" and got so bored with various whiney royals that I quit after two seasons. Started "Hell on Wheels" because I always enjoy watching Colm Meaney, and have started looking for Anson Mount's work -- but not even Colm can save this one. It's too dark (both literally and dramatically), and half the actors in it are just one amorphous white guy with long greasy hair and a week's worth of beard.

Open to suggestions. No zombies, please! Preferably something funny.

>1 cbl_tn: I'm always looking for new tv shows to watch so thanks for starting this thread!

We just finished up Bad Sisters on Apple and it was an excellent dark comedy with a strong, mostly female, cast.

Continuing with CB Strike and The Last of Us. Not loving the latter as much now as I did at the start.

Earlier this week I finished the second season of The Mysterious Benedict Society on Disney+ before my promotional subscription expired on Friday. There aren't enough movies and shows I want to watch to make a paid subscription worthwhile for me.

Last night I watched three episodes of the second season of The Madame Blanc Mysteries on Acorn. I really enjoy the cast and the South of France setting in this series. Most of the characters are British expats so most of the dialogue is in English, with just occasional French conversations with English subtitles.

"The CNN Film follows Russian opposition leader, Alexey Navalny, through his political rise, attempted assassination and search to uncover the truth."

^"Navalny" recently won Best Documentary at the Oscars and it is a damn good one. I did not know much about Alexey Navalny, other than his poisoning. You have to admire anyone that would take on Putin. This guy is a modern hero. Streaming on HBO Max.

I am also nearly done with the first season of Fortitude. I am enjoying it well enough but still deciding if I will continue the series. I am watching it on DVD.

I just finished a documentary I think many here would enjoy if you can get your hands on the DVD or stream it on Amazon Prime, YouTube or other places:

Hello, Bookstore is about The Bookstore in Lenox, MA, and its proprietor, Matt Tannenbaum. When the pandemic hit, they had to close their doors and were open for curbside only. It's a quiet sort of film, a lot of thoughtful commentary from Matt and quotes from books, and includes interactions when people could come in the store and when they couldn't. He's a book lover, and it shows. I added at least one book to the TBR just from watching.

I'm still making my way through the reboot of Doctor Who, just starting series 6 last night.

^I started watching The Old Man on Hulu. It has been very good. Of course, Jeff Bridges is terrific and so is John Lithgow, who looks great for 77 years old. I also love the rottweilers, but these 2 have tails. I didn't realize this was based on the novel by Thomas Perry. I read and enjoyed this author many years ago.

My wife and I are watching "Why Women Kill" on Paramount. It is a fun comedy/drama, similar to the TV show "Desperate Housewives", but dealing with 3 different timelines. Good cast too.

Lastly, I have decided to revisit Better Call Saul. I stopped watching after season 2, for whatever reason. I am now powering through the 3rd season. It was a good decision.

I've been watching a lot of TV lately, so I thought I'd post this here (also on my personal thread, but I love the idea of sharing what we're watching!)

I watched the first episode of Call the Midwife (PBS), season 12 today! I just adore that show, and this season looks to be another good one. It's now April 1968 in the show.

Ted Lasso (Apple+), season 3 recently started up, and we've watched the first two episodes now, two times a piece (the show moves fast, and there are a lot of details and jokes/references in the script which we don't want to miss). It's again excellent, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Picard (Paramount), season 3 is over half done, and it's a corker! Great plot, great reappearances of Star Trek Next Generation regulars, and the special effects are fantastic.

Shrinking (Apple+), Season 1 (and there will be a Season 2) is excellent, and there is only one episode left in Season 1. Terrific writing, terrific cast. It's the kind of show that segues from hilarious to heart-breaking, and does it all well. Jason Segel is amazing--his face is so expressive, and his acting is right on. Harrison Ford is in this, too, and this is my favorite thing I've ever seen him in (including anything "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones").

And then we went back in time and watched Party Down (Starz) Seasons 1 and 2 (2009-2010), currently watching Season 3 (ten+ years later). Very funny, quite silly at points, but always entertaining.

And that got us watching Silicon Valley (HBO). There are six seasons, and we've just started the first one. Similar to Party Down; makes fun of a working environment, this time, the tech startup culture of Silicon Valley. I believe there will be a seventh season, though IMDB says just six at this point. There have been recent commercials, however, so I have to think there will be a seventh.

Well, that's it! (haha) We really enjoy our TV!

I just finished the first (and so far, the only) season of Beyond Paradise, a spin-off of Death in Paradise and a BritBox original series. Second detective Humphrey Goodman and his girlfriend Martha are back in England. They've just moved to Devon, where he joins a local police force in a seaside town. It's a fun show!

I've also just finished the first season of The Good Karma Hospital on Acorn and I love this one, too. I have three more seasons of this one to enjoy. :-)

Someone recommended Jury Duty the other day and I've been binge watching it the last few days. The concept is really creative. It's supposed to be a documentary about jury duty, but the trial is fake and all of the characters are improv actors except for one guy who thinks it's a real trial.
