"Edit Genre" bug

1PitcherBooks
Mrz. 11, 2023, 5:59 pm

On each book's 'main page' there was
a 'Genre' list in the right hand column.
It used to contain a list of genres but now
this is all that appears :
"Edit Genres
Click to select or deselect genres. Flag genres that are egregiously wrong."
The 'save' and 'cancel' button still appear but
No list of genres anymore."

Is this feature being phased out or
are there plans to fix this bug?

>1 PitcherBooks:

I've tried several books and they all still have genres on my system, and clicking the pencil still lets you edit genres. Not saying you're wrong, but it doesn't appear to be universal.

You should report what you are using when you see the bug: Type of computer or device (phone, tablet, computer, whatever), operating system (Windows 11, Mac OS 12.1, iOS 16.2, etc.), and browser (Chrome 100, Firefox 101.1, etc.). Also any unusual browser extensions you might have installed. Sometimes bugs are environment-specific.

A screen shot might help, too.

>4 Taliesien: ETA: Seems to be account specific. Genres working on my other LT account. examples below

Since you found that it was account-specific, I'm not going to do much work to document this (e.g. I'm not clearing my browser cache!). I did log out and back in, though. Here are some nice obscure items that still have genres for me:

Anne Worthington Prescott, Imagining Fame: An Introduction to Geoffrey Chaucer's The House of Fame

Hilda M R Murray, The Middle English Poem, Erthe Upon Erthe

E. Gordon Duff, The printers, stationers and book-binders of Westminster and London from 1476 to 1535

All of these had genres in my usual browser (M1 Macintosh, MacOS 13.2.1, Firefox 110.0.1). I also verified the first two in Safari, which I rarely use and would not have much in its cache.

So, as you found, it's not universal.

Taliesien :
I use only firefox/mozilla and I clear all cookies & cache every time I move from site to site.
The first image you show is exactly what I saw when I reported this bug.
I did not connect that I unchecked all genres in settings to this "edit genre" per book bug til you mentioned it.

Today, every book I check now lists only two genres: fantasy & science fiction.
Those are also the only two genres I checked to reduce an overwhelming number of useless book recommendations in every genre.

So it appears I'm stuck with two choices
1. check all genres in settings and be able to edit genres on a per book basis but also get flooded with 100s of unwanted book recommendations
2. check only the appropriate settings for book recommendations realizing that limits the ability to appropriately edit genres on a per book basis.

It seems like there should be some way to untie the connection
between checking all genres in 'settings'
which creates an unwanted flood-tide of book recommendations
but which currently appears to be the only method in which to have a usable genre list in the 'edit genres' feature.

At this point, I'll quit using the 'edit genres' per book feature
in order to have a usable and manageable list of book recommendations.

>8 PitcherBooks: Recs you can control by choosing what books to base them on. Turn it off for some collections (under 'edit collections, each one has several settings when you click on it) or turn it off for all and create 'for recs' collection as the only one to be used for it, than add books you want used for recs there.

I appreciate your efforts to work out this problem.
No worries. And I agree the old system was more user friendly.
If LT's IT people ever decide to fix the bugs, fine. If they don't, they don't. Such is life.

Thanks for the BISAC link.
That is a pretty thorough listing! Would be great if LT actually used BISAC. It would cut down the overwhelming volume and weed out unwanted recommendations.

Thanks to all for your time and effots...

>10 SandraArdnas: Thx, SandraArdnas,
I had completely forgotten about the edit collections feature
and just now turned off recommendations for all but one.

But it still seems odd to me ...
the connection between checking all genres in 'settings'
which creates an unwanted flood-tide of book recommendations
(which stopped the moment I unchecked them all)
but which appeared to be the only method in which to have a usable genre list in the 'edit genres' feature.

Thx to you, I now know this isn't the only way to stop being inundated with unwanted recommendations. If there's still too big a flood, I'll edit out the last category in the collections feature.

Appreciate your help.

I think genre should affect what genres are displayed on your recommendations page, the new one, but it shouldn't affect how many recommendations you get.
