christie's personal life

Can anyone fill me in on her personal life? I understand she had a difficult marriage and went into hiding or something. Anyone know the scoop?

I just started her autobiography about 1/2 hour ago. It's long, about 519 pages, and I'm so looking forward to finally reading it!

Agatha Miller married Archie Christie. They had a daughter together, Rosalind. I just looked up the significant bit in the autobiography about Archie (she put in an index, so looked up "Christie, Archibald, estrangement and divorce"!) where she says that he fell in love with another woman and wanted a divorce. She did disappear for some time - but in the introduction to her Autobiography the publishers specifically state that she doesn't say anything about the disappearance in it. It's all speculation. There was a movie done about her disappearance as I recall. She later married archaeologist Max Mallowan.

She wrote 68 novels, more than 100 short stories, 17 plays and published in 103 languages.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't aware that she wrote an autobiography but I'm glad to hear that she did. Let us know how you liked it when you're done. I only started to read her novels about 2 years ago so I'm behind.

I highly recommend Come, Tell Me How You Live, Agatha Christie's account of time spent with her husband Max at archeological digs in the Middle East in the 1930s.

I think the one I read was The Authorised Biography of Agatha Christie. But I'm not sure if that's the one or not. The one I read spent a lot of time on her childhood and courtship. I'm not sure I finished it. A *lot* of detail.

I finished Agatha Christie An Autobiography and loved it. (you can see my review if you wish) There was lots and lots of detail. One thing I didn't write in my review is that I felt as if she was talking to me over tea, telling me the story of her life.

There's obviously a lot she left unsaid, including the disappearance and other references to Max Mallowan's infidelities and eventual marriage to his mistress Barbara Parker a year after Christie died. But, everybody's entitled to their privacy. I do think her marriage to Max was good. Just, perhaps on his part, not exclusive.

There are lots of biographies of AC. I checked Amazon and found 8 without getting past the first page. I may or may not read one or more of them.

The only other official non-fiction she wrote was Come, Tell Me How You Live. With #4 tropics' recommendation, I'll be reading that soon.

I'm in the middle of Come, Tell Me How You Live and it's as engrossing as any of her fiction. She has a way of making the reader her friend very quickly.

We watched the BBC documentary/movie last night "Agatha Christie: A Life in Pictures." It's interesting what pieces get left out. For instance, the way the film portrayed her marriage with Max made it seem idyllic. I didn't know he too was messing around with other women. Was it just not possible for men to be faithful to their wives at that time? Ugh.

I agree with all who've recommended Come Tell Me How You Live and would also recommend another book, The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie by Charles Osborne.
