Hi all,
I am currently a full-time MLS librarian at a public library but I have aspirations to get into archiving. I'm just not sure how to go about it. Does anyone have any advice for me? I'd appreciate any input you can offer.
Thanks!

Here's the link to the Society of American Archivists. Check out the information under "The Archives Profession" tab.

Also it's worth checking out the Academy of Certified Archivists website. http://www.certifiedarchivists.org/
You can always volunteer in a local archive to see if you really like the work and get some hands-on experience.
Best wishes on your journey!

If you know of any students looking for an internship in documents management for a local government entity next summer, please send me a private message and I'll let you know details. The location is North Carolina and unfortunately, at this point, the internship it is likely to be unpaid.

You are better off advertising in your local city. With no pay you can't expect someone to travel. Personally I would never promote or recommend an unpaid position.

Liam, normally I would agree with you, a person deserves to be paid for their labor. However times are bad for scholarly occupations in the US these days and getting some experience is vital to finding a paying job. Last month I attended a symposium on careers in public history and everyone I talked to was willing to work an unpaid internship. I am afraid that it is the same for librarians and archivists.

Just trying to be helpful. Having once had an unpaid internship I would have been thrilled to be paid. As it was I received credit towards a degree and an experience to add to my resume. Perhaps such arrangements are unique to the States.
