So, what do you do when you're not reading? Are you a student at university; do you work? A parent maybe?

I'm a student of history and literature, which means I'm reading almost all the time. When I'm not reading, I like to watch detective-series on TV or take my bike and go to the beach.

I go to school or I go to work, or I paint and draw. :) Or exercise, I've been trying to work a lot more of that into my life lately.

I'm on LT, of course! :-P

I'm a forum moderator on a Narnia movie fansite and I have a lot of online friends there. I also write music; my father and I are slowly recording an album. And my husband and I are also very involved with our church.

Oh, and I work as an editor for a marketing company.

Currently applying for jobs teaching ESL in central and eastern Europe. Just got certified last month in Krakow. So I'm hoping that soon the answer to this will be teaching and learning a Slavic language.

But for now, until I find a position, I'm pretty much reading. I write some, play cards with my brother, and, uh, read some more.

Oh yeah and I go to bookstores. lol

Not reading? When does that happen? ;-D

I'm currently making my way through grad school (= tons of reading), preparing to teach my first writing class (more reading), and working on my own novel(s) and poems (which, yes, also involves reading).

If I'm ever not reading or writing, I like hiking and camping.

When not reading, I like #6 am writing or dreading teaching.

If I'm ever not writing or reading, then I'm either playing video games or asleep. The latter more than the former.

I work 12 hours a day 7 days a week... so i mainly do that when im not reading... though i try to slack off as much as possible:P... at work i write a lot of emails, shop (mainly books) entirely too much (i cant just go down the street to buy most things)... try teaching myself other languages, and check up on www.roosterteeth.com, www.damninteresting.com, mentalfloss.com... and www.flickr.com/photos/simius_aetherium... i wouldnt call myself an amateur photographer really... but i spend a lot on my camera and take a lot of pictures:P... and i try to find new places to travel (im DYING to see the Pyramids in Sudan

When im in my CHU (at home)... im usually either watching movies, playing XBOX 360 or reading... reading is the only thing i do every day, no matter where im at though

I'm a veterinary student, so during the school year, most of my reading-for-fun time is taken up by reading-for-school time (not so fun).

Lots of free time this summer though, and my reading is only broken up by the occasional nap or the very occasional run. :)

Jul. 25, 2008, 5:48 pm

I balance my time between school, two jobs, and the occasional but fleeting "free time". I'm an english major, work part time as a file clerk at a law firm, and part time grading papers for high school English classes as a reader. Which means I'm always working with words... be it studying & analyzing the classics, correcting the grammar of budding scholars, or skimming legal docs. Unfortunately, school makes it difficult to maintain the extracurricular reading habits I'm used to... I always have a hard time keeping track of more than one or two novels at a time. But I suppose Reading with a Purpose requires more original thought, rather than the passive consumption of book after book... so at least it keeps me sharp. I hope.

When my face isn't pressed into a book I'm working one of my two jobs or spending time with my friends. My social life has gotten a little out of control lately so my reading has become more limited than I prefer... at least I had time to read when I was a little outcast child.

That's the sign of a sickness, isn't it? You know your bibliophilia is a mite out of hand when you start thinking to yourself, "Maybe I could read more if I didn't have as many friends." :-P

When I'm not reading?

I work. You would think running an internet magazine (www.gypsyblack.com) would require reading's other half - writing, but no - i balance the books, deal with staff, deal with technicians, photographers, and ad agencies. It's a good thing I like to haggle.

Oh, I also watch bollywood movies, and cartoons. Sleep. Forget to eat.

At the moment I work full time and study part time. Although that will change in a month when I finish my last course (yay!).

In my free time other than reading I love to cross stitch and I also play World of Warcraft with my boyfriend, real-life friends and not-so-real friends :). (Hmm nerd? I don't care it all makes me supremely happy.)

The problem is that I don't just 'dabble' in my interests I drown myself in them. I have books stacked up everywhere. I like to watch tv series and movies when I cross stitch so I have tons of DVD's. I have a room dedicated to cross stitch stuff (stash is what the true addict calls it) and I can spend a whole day playing WoW and not notice that the sun has set until I can't see my keyboard. Finishing my studies will give me more time to 'do it all' lol.

Right now my life more or less IS books, but outside of Shakespeare classes and lit seminars I'm in the process of learning French. Sooo many flash cards...

When I'm feeling less productive there's "House M.D." re-runs and food and just enough socializing to keep me from being a recluse. Just barely. I used to fence, but the team on campus doesn't mesh that well as a group (everyone essentially hates each other), so as much as I'd like to continue with that I'll need to find a less toxic atmosphere first. I haven't stabbed anyone in ages and it's making me twitchy.

What do you mean when you're not reading? You mean THERE IS ANOTHER WAY?!!

I was at university until a year ago, which meant a lot of reading but sadly very little of what I really WANTED to read. Then I had to leave when I developed a crippling agoraphobia which combined with depression to leave me pretty much lacking any function.

This past year has been taken up agoraphobia-busting... That means a lot of free time but with no friends, which can be awful but DOES mean that I've had blissful freedom to read and watch DVDs, shop online, enjoy leisurely pain-au-chocolat-and-coffee breakfasts, walk in the sunshine and get a tiny weeny bit obsessed with LibraryThing (ahem). That, my friends, is looking on the shiny bookish bright side.

Jan. 10, 2009, 10:24 pm

I'm a grad student, working toward an M.A. in English (which, I guess, technically still constitutes as reading when I'm not writing papers). I also have a full time job and a husband, which takes up quite a bit of time.

I love to scrapbook! That's my second biggest hobby after reading, and probably even more expensive than my book-buying habit. I love to do it, though. It's almost therapeutic for me, I think.

And I blog! It's a miracle I have time to do anything, apparently!

41elliepotten
Jan. 12, 2009, 11:40 am

>40 jfslone:, I scrapbook too! Although perhaps not in the same sense, the time consuming patterns and fabrics and mounting photos way that people usually mean (which always looks lovely but I've never tried it).

I am a bit of an obsessive personality so I write a journal (though I've neglected it recently) which has run to about 14 volumes of chatter, I keep a commonplace book (quotes and book extracts) which is in its 3rd notebook, and keep a scrapbook to boot.

That's in it's third volume too I think - just a big spiral-bound notebook with things stuck in that reflect me at that time - cinema and event tickets, gift tags, greetings cards, stray photos, but also newspaper articles, movie stars, furniture, random gorgeous pictures - anything that moves me or reflects the things I love and am interested in. Over time it's turned into quite an interesting document, from boy bands and kittens and school problems (aged 11) right through to books and 'oh my, what a gorgeous sofa...' at 21!

42haidiw
Jan. 13, 2009, 12:36 pm

I don't actually read that much during term time, but each summer and christmas break I read as many books as I can. For most of the year I study for my MA in English linguistics and social science, play computer and console games (but only sweet ones like Super Mario) and travel between England and Finland. Not ecologically sustainable I know :(

post 41 has inspired me to start scrap booking. I do have a heap of old cinema tickets and tags etc, but they're in folder rather than in chronological order. I also used to have a "reversed guest book" of sorts before: I would take it to other people's houses and have them write/draw/glue stuff in it.

43elliepotten
Jan. 13, 2009, 4:39 pm

>42 haidiw:, awwww, I feel oddly touched! I do keep a few cards and things in a little wooden 'treasure chest' with some other things like special jewellery and keepsakes, but mainly out of practicality - they're too big or bulky for a book sometimes. I do love looking back over things, it's like an alternative life on the page, things that were happening and what was important to me...

Jan. 17, 2009, 3:14 pm

I'm so glad I found this group! I don't know a lot of people my age who read a lot, let alone know what LT is! That being said, I dabble a little of everything outside of reading: snowboarding, kayaking (when i get the chance), trying out local dive bars and awesome comfort food restaurants in my new geographical area (the everlasting search for the perfect chili dog), watch good movies and TV shows (although finding a familiar, comfortable movie on TBS or the like is a treasure for me) and I like non-conventional crafts (things made out of records are a personal favorite). I just finished going to school full-time with two jobs and have moved up in the world to one full time job and no school, so free time is definitely something I don't take for granted. Nice to see you all on here!

I'm in grad school, so I read alot of textbook and professional literature. BUT, I've managed to fit in leisure reading in this semester, which was not possible when I was an English Lit undergrad. When I'm not doing school reading, I'm working on my fanfiction or my own stuff. I also keep the dogs entertained with walks and such. Late in the day I've got to make dinner and tidy up the apartment so I can spend my evening with my overworked husband. In between that I like to play Animal Crossing or Halo 3.

When I'm not reading I'm in class (like), doing homework which consists of working in Adobe CS3 (love) or doing math (hate), working retail (hate), chores (hate), getting all crafty holly hobby on my friends and family (love love love) or vegetating in front of the tv when my brain can't function anymore.

When I'm getting all crafty I knit, crochet, afghan (usually making scarves, hats, or blankets) as well as beading and knotting for jewelry and I make mixed media collages.

I also spend an obscene amount of time online (not so much the past few weeks) talking to friends, on LT, online games, etc.

I'm also teaching myself to listen to music and do other stuff as I don't have entirely enough time to just solely listen to music.

thought it might be prudent to mention I'm an English major so this is my first semester without an English class so leisure reading is possible and pure love!

Awww, isn't that feeling wonderful? I had to leave my degree (slightly different to graduation, but hey), but despite everything that was going on it was so wonderful being able to read again without feeling I should be reading something else, or dissecting everything to shreds until I hated it anyway!

49jfslone
Feb. 12, 2009, 1:03 pm

Agreed. I constantly mourn the loss of my personal reading time. I knew when I decided to go back to graduate school that I would be making that sacrifice, but between work, classes, and homework I have less than an hour a day to read what I WANT to read. I miss it!

I work full time in a bookshop, I'm just about to start my masters degree in children's literature, and I study viticulture, so pretty much every moment of my day involves books in some way, just as I always dreamt it would when I was a child... I also spend a lot of time cooking and gardening - the idea is that one day I'll be able to cook a whole meal with stuff from my garden, but so far all I've managed to produce is some herbs, chillis and a couple of sick looking carrots.

Today I had my first shift back as a volunteer for the Mind shop in town. I worked there for two summers a couple of years ago, but now I'm there as a stepping stone to overcoming agoraphobia and anxiety and getting back to work. I get a gentle morning's social workout, and as a reward at the end I can try on all the nice clothes that I've spotted on my way round the shop, and buy yet more books with my staff discount!

When I'm not reading, I'm writing. Jotting down random ideas for a plot, writing long-overdue handwritten letters to a friend, or writing unrequested blog entries on blogger, facebook or redroom.

When I'm not writing, I'm probably watching Lost. I have an unhealthy obsession with that show.

When I'm not watching Lost, I daydream a lot. I like to call it "visualization". I'm visualizing my future. Yes, that's it. (Deep down, I know I'm just daydreaming.)

Well, I'm in college for English, so on the rare occasions I'm not reading I'm at class or working at the campus library. I also put down my books in favor of a video game or movie with my friends from time to time. I also knit, paint, draw, make other various forms of art, and am involved in several clubs across campus.
When I am at home I'm generally playing with my now 8 month old baby sister, or out socializing with my friends and boyfriend.

In my free time, when I'm not reading, I'm a huge video game player. I get on a cycle of sorts where I'll read a chapter or 2 in my book, play through the next section of my current game, spend half an hour online, and then circle back to the book again.

I used to write a lot (poetry) but I've either lost the ability to write or I've just been too busy with games/books to take the time. Not sure which.

When I'm not reading, I'm teaching my middle school ESL students to read, write, explore, pronounce English words well, question things...

I'f I'm not doing that, then I'm probably in the gym coaching (basically playing) basketball. Or at this time of year, track.

If I'm not doing that...I'm doing all the administrative mumbo jumbo that comes with being an ESL teacher in US public schools, or with coaching a team.

If I'm not doing that: I'm looking for someone who speaks Mandarin, Portuguese or Swahili (not so easy here) to talk to, or Spanish or ASL (pretty easy); I'm looking for aftermarket parts for my car; I'm wishing I was travelling; (or most likely) I'm listening to my boyfriend play his 360 while drifting off to sleep with my dog and cat.

Holy interesting people, Batman. And they say our generation is flawed.

Umm..lately, I work with homeless youth at night, write during the day, watch way more tv than is healthy when I can, try to learn new things (this year's projects - horseback riding and guitar...not as cowboy as it sounds) in between times, get outside as much as I can, and half-assedly look for High School English teaching positions in places I'd actually like to live.

Mostly, all that can get shelved in favour of reading, does, though.

Video gaming is my other main fun thing to do besides reading. And then after that comes computers and programming, which I'm at college right now for. Studying is probably my third sort of 'hobby.'

And then it just a bunch of other random things I do to pass the time - collecting dinosaur toys, a lot of Pokemon-related stuff, making skirts, making databases for random things around the house, cleaning and re-cleaning, visiting all the little shops around town, a bit of drawing and painting, trying to cook anything edible, putting off getting a license, and lately, trying and failing to get a job. Thought I caught one at a bookstore the other day but someone beat me to it. Sad day was sad.

Otherwise, I play guitar, occasionally draw (paint when I can afford it), give into the call of hedonism at times, play the occasional video game, explore my city which is still new to me after five months, waste time on the internet, fit friends in from time to time, and somewhere in there is a part-time job in which I am basically an office assistant with very irregular hours.

It's all good.

Usually if I'm not reading then I'm at work- as a librarian (dream job!)

I'm really into audiobooks right now, so if I'm not at home and reading then I'm likely doing my laundry and listening to an audiobook, making dinner and listening to an audiobook, walking my dog and listening to an audiobook... you get the idea.

I love drinking too much wine with my boyfriend and playing video games. I also like camping, hiking, and cross-country skiing when I can go.

(I know... nerd alert!)

I'm a parent and an Accounting major so I'm usually taking care of my daughter or studying.

When not reading, I'm either found working at the library, writing my novel, cross-stitching, or playing video games. :)
