John Carter's ABC for Book Collectors is now available on line - FREE!

I've just received this announcement from Oak Knoll:

Oak Knoll Press and the British Library have given permission to the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) to make available for non-commercial use a digital copy of their latest edition of the classic book ABC for Book Collectors by John Carter as revised by Nicolas Barker.

I do recommend downloading the PDF file. You may need it when you're not online and, as carport suggested, webpages disappear sometimes.

Thank you. This is a most excellent book. I downloaded the PDF and boomarked the site. I note that the current edition of this book sells for prices comparable with contemporary literature, and is thus quite affordable. Only my lack of shelf space keeps me from ordering a copy for my reference shelf.

Then cull your shelves. I refer to my copy of the book at least every couple of weeks.

Oh, well, I am in the process of doing that... but it is a long process and I will have to cull very deeply to have any shelf space at all. Right now, I estimate I could double my shelf space if there were room for more shelves and I would still have books in boxes and in double (and sometimes triple) rows on my shelves. What I need most is a bigger apartment or my own house. In the meantime, I do have the PDF. I'm not a collector in the real sense anyhow... those books would cost more per each volume than I spend in an entire year on books... not counting the fact that I spend way too much as it is...

Edited to add: The PDF is free of irritating DRM... so if I wanted one badly enough, I could print my own copy...
