Anybody else notice the imminent collision in the group image? It just now dawned upon me.

Thucydides reportedly said that "a collision at sea can ruin your whole day" - but unless he knew Daedalus he had no idea about what an aerial collision could do to you!

Just obtained a copy of 'THE PRICE OF VIGILANCE' (2001) which reviews the loss of over two hundred American aircrew on surveillance (spy) flights over the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This was believed to be an acceptable risk and loss since we knew nothing about the military capability or actions of the soviets after the Second World War. Remember that the soviets has hydrogen bombs and advanced rockets by the early fifties, as well as many long range bombers. The flights were ended only when spy satellites became available.
