I found the last page or two of War Game: Village Green to No-Man's-Land by Michael Foreman really upsetting. It's for older children, illustrated, about WW1, the trenches and the Christmas football game on No-Man's Land. It's a short read and I recommend it to everyone.
I recently read The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy by Tim Burton and was enjoying the Edward Gorey-ness of it until I got to the title story, which I found particularly sick and gruesome!

I love The Melancholoy Death of Oyster Boy! It's one of those books that is just so horrible, all I can do is laugh at the sickness. Reminds me of Charles Addams work.

You might like The Boy Who Kicked Pigs by Tom Baker. I'm lucky enough to own a signed copy :P
I only know the Addams Family through the series and film, I didn't realise they were based on books - thanks for that!
