Do you think at Dickens meant Mr Peggotty's quest for the fallen Lil' Emily to read as quite so creepy and obsessive? Or is it just me who sees it like that?

I don't think he meant it to seem creepy. I didn't take it that way at all. He wanted to rescue her and assure her that the family still loved her.

Sometimes it is hard to view the nineteenth century with our twenty-first century eyes, isn't it?

I agree. Mr Peggotty looked on Emily as his daughter. I think most fathers would go to great lengths to find a lost child. Nothing creepy about that.

AuntieCatherine, what do you find creepy and obsessive about it? I'm intrigued.
