I was going to recommend October Sky too but see that Hailelib beat me to it.

I suggest Pinckney Benedict who has written some excellent short stories. His novel Dogs of God is rather gripping and intense as well.

Stories of Breece D'J Pankake Pankake was a University of Virginia student from West Virginia who committed suicide at an early age. His stories are truly striking.

Jeanette Walls's memoir moves through various states along with her, but a good portion of what she writes about takes place in small town West Virginia. A real page-turner of a gem book coming out of a real tough life. The Glass Castle

bfertig:I was also thinking about posting The Glass Castle here. I couldn't decided because so much of it takes place in desert western US. But the WV parts are eye-opening.
