Powell's City of Books at PDX

I'll be at Powell's City of Books in Portland, Oregon this weekend. At Home with Books by Estelle Ellis is on my list -I recall it quite fondly from my last bookstore job back in the day. One of its booklovers, surprisingly, is Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones!

Certainly worth it - an incredibly beautiful book! :-) (also the first one I thought of when I read the title of this group).

I just finished The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop by Lewis Buzbee. This was a delightfully warm book about books and reading. The emotion really came through to me. And he talked about formative books---those books that spark a love of reading in a young person. I was thrilled to read that his formative book was Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck---Mine was Of Mice and Men and my all-time favorite is East of Eden!

As it happened Powell's didn't have Ellis's At Home with Books, so I spent about as much as I would have on it on five other books, most of them books about books! Books that Changed the World by Robert B. Downs; The Book on the Bookshelf by Henry Petroski; The Voynich Manuscript by Gerry Kennedy ; The Marx Brothers at the Movies by Paul D. Zimmerman; and last but not least, Anime: From Akira to Howl's Moving Castle by Susan J. Napier. A nice haul.

You will love The Book on the Bookshelf. It is a facinating read.

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas. I'd forgotten that part of this biblio love is about the actual, physical book itself; it's been fun to get back into that.

I'll be @ Powell's this Saturday. I'll be looking for anything I don't have by Nicholas A Basbanes, as well as anything I happen to stumble across. I have a love/hate relationship with Powell's. I can never seem to leave without buying something. :D

No kidding! I was in Powell's only once (SO FAR) and had trouble leaving, so I understand what you are talking about.
