So... has anyone here been able to get the Librarything search widget to work on LJ?

LJ doesn't allow users to include javascript, so the LT widgets can't function on LJ.

I was just wondering if it would be possible to fake having an lj LT widget by using one of the methods of embedding lj in a website. I don't know enough about about embedded ljs to know if it'd even be worth the trouble, though, since lj userid links probably don't go to the embedded version. Anybody tried this?

To my knowledge, that's referring to embedding an LJ into another website rather than trying to embed another site into LJ... I don't see how this can simulate an LT widget

You can fudge it, by embedding LJ code into another website alongside the LT widget, but the LT widget will not work within LJ code. Since LJ is open source it is possible to make this fudge, but I only know one person who has successfully done it (with a non-LT applet) and I have no idea how he did it.

It'd be nice to have. Most of the ppl I lend books to are on LJ so it'd be handy to have. Should we post this to the Recommended Site Improvements group?

Tim and Chris are aware of this issue, but it is not too high on the task list right now (probably means a re-development of the widget especially for LJ users).

#5 Ooh, can you tell us who it is so that I can go look at it and marvel?

#7 Yeah, it'd be nice, but it's not high up my list either. Didn't a user mention that he was working on a non-javascript version to share, the last time this came up? or was I imagining things again?

The LT blog has visions of LJ widgets for Christmas dancing in my head.

Maybe I misunderstand you, but LJ does allow javascript. I've added a widget to my LJ (12-30), and to my LJ bio.

xtien, the widget you're using on LJ is a dynamically generated image using php, not javascript. Chris (thank you!) developed it specifically for use on LJ and other sites where javascript isn't welcome. If you visit the LT blog, you can see the javascript version of the LibraryThing widget in the right column, under "Tim's Blog Widget."

I just wanted to add something in relation to the last post. On the LT blog, there is a comment on that post that gives an example of how the code should look when posting the widget to your LJ. If you look at the comments, look for a comment posted on 12/26/2006, by "yet another bibliophile". I found his example very helpful when posting the widget to my LJ.

I've written up a tutorial for adding the LJ styled widget to the Smooth Sailing sidebar:
