Over on the 999 challenge threads http://www.librarything.com/topic/53703#972124 we've been discussing different types of audio devices to use while exercising. I posed the question about whether anyone knew of a waterproof device to use while in the pool, and realized you all are the better group to know the answer.

Does anybody know how to edit the actual TOPIC header when you begin a new topic. Seems I have invented a new device!

Can't edit a topic unfortunately.

About the waterproof devices: check out OtterBox. They make waterproof cases for mp3 players and other electronics. I have not used one myself but I have a couple friends who love them.

I have the otterbox and waterproof headphones. I really like it, and especially enjoy swimming laps while listening to a book or podcasts. However.....for my 20gb iPod, the case is quite heavy. One must learn to strategically place the case on the swimming suit. Our YMCA frowns on swimming bottomless.

I had a waterproof case from H2O Audio. For me, it ended up completely useless. While it did keep my iPod dry and the band kept it firmly attached to me, the "waterproof headphones" did not work at all underwater. They did not keep a water-tight seal in my ears, and once the water leaked in (after only 30 seconds swimming!) the sound was practically inaudible. I called and emailed the company trying to find a solution--no help there. Complete waste of money, and not cheap either.

I did finally get a really great one thru Amazon - it's the GSI Waterproof ipod pouch with earphones....it cost me about $30 incl shipping. I use it at least 3-4 x week in the pool for about 40 minutes at a crack....I love it, have had no leaks, good audio (it's not a concert hall, but fine for listening to books), and I find I have extended my workouts....

This maybe wayyy behind the times, and i also just ordered the H20 Audio for books, but for music i've got an older FINIS with Jaw conduction that rocks in the pool. Unfortunately, memory size makes most books a pain in the butt and it's hard to pause/continue with them. Also, i had to reformat into a smaller size. I have some of the pouches as well for outdoor exercise but I'd never trust them in a pool situation.... I tend to drown electronics as it is.

I've heard mixed issues with the H20 Audio but am hoping to fix the headphone issue separately... some people rave about it. For books, I have no other option right now. I'll let you know.
