I'm thinking of embarking on a long reading journey and looking for advice.

I always see Daniel Boorstin's trilogy at the bookstore and it's always intrigued me. These are The Discoverers, The Seekers, and The Creators. I'm thinking of reading these three and the following that with Jacques Barzun's From Dawn to Decadence.

Has anyone read all four of these? Does Barzun make a good follow-up companion to Boorstin?

I've read some of Boorstin's essays, but not any of the massive trilogy volumes (though I'm pretty sure I own at least two of them).

I'd be curious to know what people think of them as well...

I have read at least one of the three Boorstin books and probably more. I was sufficiently impressed with the writing and the accumulation of facts that I sought out a hard cover copy of one of them to give as a gift.

I don't remember the books with any clarity anymore (it was about twenty years ago) but Boorstin's reputation remains good with me.

I would read the Barzun book first and then Boorstin.

I don't have The Seekers but I have Boorstin's other two volumes in the trilogy. I prefer to dip into them. They're the sort of books that are packed with information as is the Barzun book, but I prefer to dip into them on the side.

You could read 10 pages per day of Barzun, then augment it with a search through Boorstin for relevant material.

Jacques Barzun strikes me as pretty humorous in his commentary. I loved his book, and there are all kinds of delightful notes set off from the main text.
