I'm wondering as I read through Borges if there are any contemporary Argentinean authors who have been influenced by him. Or is he sort of a standalone figure in South American literature.

Not that he's a contemporary writer but Borges used to collaborate with Adolfo Bioy Casares on certain writing projects.

I've been racking my brains trying to think of any contemporary Argentinian writers. Alberto Manguel has been heavily influenced by Borges - his works include The Dictionary of Imaginary Places & Stevenson under the Palm Trees, (Robert Louis Stevenson was one of Borges favourite writers as well.

a little off topic, maybe? but this reminded me of a recent piece in The Believer - something like a Borges in the age of Wikipedia...

I believe he's Brazilian, but Luis Fernando Verissimo wrote Borges and the Eternal Orangutans

I remember reading once that Borges was not very influential among the crop of Argentinian writers that arose after him, mainly because he very consciously distanced himself from the nationalist sort of work that he wrote in his youth. Unlike many of his peers and successors, he was very interested in European and American literature and willing to direct his work to a more international audience. Perhaps this has led to a tendency among Argentinian writers to distance themselves from Borges.
